The tunnel boring machine(TBM) planned to tunnel under Sruwadducon Bay has been named ‘Fionnuala’
after one of the children of Lir. In the story the 4 children of Lir are turned into swans for 900 years by their jealous step-mother.
They spend their last 300 years in the seas off North Mayo. ‘Fionnuala the TBM’ is 140 m long and weighs almost 500 tonnes.
It is painted with the Mayo colours and is to be transported to Erris for early next summer.
Shell plan to bore a 4.5 m diameter 4.9 km tunnel up Sruwadducon bay.
This is Shell’s gift to Sruwadducon - ‘bod nimhneach an ghaill dhaill’ (the poisonous penis of the bitter and the blind ). read full story / add a comment

The Shell to Sea campaign is still running strong 11 years after the inception of the Corrib gas project. Work was completely halted at Shell’s compound yesterday for over five hours in a great show of resiliance by local campaigners and their supporters. For the past two weeks now, Shell have been attempting to remove masses of peat from the compound in preparation for the tunnel boring machine which is expected to arrive early next year. Progress has been continuously disrupted as protesters brave the winter weather to stop trucks and a determined resistance is building momentum. read full story / add a comment

Friday 25th November saw over 5 hours of Shell's peat and stone haulage completely blocked by campaigners, and no arrests were made. First thing in the morning four campaigners had trucks blocked for over an hour and a half, and later on one person climbed on top of a peat truck outside Shell's Bellanaboy refinery, remaining there for 3 and a half hours stopping all haulage. read full story / add a comment

Shell is removing peat bog from the tunnelling compound in Aughoose and replacing it with stone and gravel from nearby quarries. The increased truck movements has not gone unchallenged. read full story / add a comment

On Tuesday 15th November, An Taisce board member Attracta Uí Bhroin travelled to Belmullet Civic Centre to defend the withdrawal of An Taisce’s legal challenges to the validity of consents for the Corrib Gas project. An Taisce have claimed that their settlement is a 'victory for the environment' despite the fact that the State remains in breach of European environmental directives in proceeding with the Corrib project. The next day campaigners stopped Shell’s peat haulage outside Bellanaboy refinery site to demonstrate that despite An Taisce settling with the State, local campaigners will continue to defend the safety of the community. read full story / add a comment

About 40 Shell to Sea campaigners blocked the Aughoose compound this morning - all Shell employees prevented entering compound 7.30 to 9.30. The road was kept open to local traffic by the campaign. There was no Garda presence. Just after 10 Shell to Sea activists started setting up an Occupy Shell Corrib Camp at the gates of the refinery in a show of solidarity with the global Occupy movements! read full story / add a comment

Last week, an Taisce pulled out of a judicial review challenging the granting of consents in Sruwaddacon Bay as part of the Bellinaboy gas refinery project. Already the subject of a ten year campaign, this was not going to be taken lightly. The local community have been left with very little options, but that had not stopped the determination to fight on. read full story / add a comment

On Tuesday morning outside Shell's Bellanaboy refinery in Mayo 15 people blocked a Barrett's quarry truck from making a delivery of stone to Shell's tunneling compound in Aughoose, halting all other deliveries for the morning. On Thursday last, the 15th September, Shell's private security force, IRMS continued their practice of using force on the public road as they see fit. Once again the Gardaí sat close by and witnessed this unlawful use of force by IRMS and allowed it to continue unimpeded. read full story / add a comment

Tuesday 13th September six people from the Rossport Solidarity Camp went down to Shell's tunnelling compound in Aughoose, Co. Mayo to disrupt work. Work was slowed from three separate actions spread over 2 hours as people interfered with fencing work and then two people got up on a tractor making a delivery to the compound. read full story / add a comment

On Wednesday 31st August at 8am 15 people entered Barrett’s quarry, just outside Bangor Erris in Co. Mayo and stopped work for the whole day, leaving at 5:30pm. Barrett’s is a subcontractor on the Corrib Gas Project, currently bringing truckloads of gravel and hardcore to Shell’s site in Aughoose. read full story / add a comment

Between lock-ons, mass trespasses, lorry climbing and a breach of security at Shell's refinery, this week brought a lot of people out protesting. Locals who haven't been out on the roads in years have come out this week, and momentum is building. read full story / add a comment

From 6.00am to 9.30am Friday 26th August, three campaigners occupied Aghoos Road, as part of the ongoing protests against the controversial Shell refinery at Bellinaboy. They formed a triangle in the middle of the road using a set of especially made arm-tubes. read full story / add a comment

Today 25 people from Rossport Solidarity Camp sustained a barrage of actions against the site Shell is preparing for its tunnel boring machine. Despite 80 security and three vans of gardaí they were unable to keeps the protesters out. In the chaos that ensued one person got through the lines to d-lock themselves to one of the diggers and remained up there stopping work for 4 hours.
