A letter was handed in to the Norwegian Ambassador to Ireland at the Norwegian Embassy on Molesorth Street in Dublin yesterday. Norway has a large stake in the disputed and controversial Corrib gas scheme, despite the state company StatoilHydro, having a supposed commitment to ethcial behaviour. The letter was written by Maura's husband, Naoise, and he was accompanied by their daughter and supporters from various political backgrounds and a number of well wishers. read full story / add a comment

I just received a text from Niall Harnett saying that he just managed to walk and doctors are reasonably happy that no serious damage has be done to his back and neck. He has soft tissue trauma to the upper back and neck. He may be released tonight. A hospitalised S2S man had his prosecution case thrown out today despite fax from hospital explaining that he was unable to attend court. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday evening Shell to Sea spokesperson Maura Harrington was sentenced to 28 days in prison in relation to an assault charge arising from the incident at Pollathomais Pier on the 11th June 2007. This was the incident in which Garda led by Superintendent Joe Gannon with the assistance of a Shell digger forced their way onto private property, against the wishes of the landowner, so that Shell could place a portacabin at the base of the pier. Maura Harrington has been brought to Mountjoy Prison. read full story / add a comment

The fact that five Mayo Gardaí earned €325,111 in overtime payments last year, once again illustrates how the current Government thinking still seems to be, that throwing money at the Corrib Gas debacle will make it go away. One Mayo Garda earned €80,990 in overtime last year, which was the highest of any of the Garda claims in the country. While 3 of the top 5 overtime earners in the country came from Mayo. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday (January 22nd), Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin stated that it is "extraordinary" that gas from the Corrib field has not yet been brought onshore. Shell to Sea feels that what is really "extraordinary" is that the Government is still trying to force this experimental project through given the local community concerns regarding their health, safety and local environment. read full story / add a comment

2008 has been a year of ups and downs for the Shell to Sea campaign, however generally the last months of the year have been very positive. This is a brief review of the year and a call-out for people to get involved next year when we expect a big push from Shell and the Government to again try to force this project through. At the moment, we are planning on the assumption that a pipe-laying ship (Solitaire or otherwise) will be back anytime from spring next year, to try to finally lay the offshore pipeline. read full story / add a comment

In June of 2009 we the people of Erris will have a rare opportunity to give our oponion on issues which are of concern to us, I suggest it is time for some of our local defenders to give us people of Erris a chance to give them a mandate to speak on our behalf! read full story / add a comment

Over the last week/ten days, local people in what Shell and the government like to style as the 'receiving communities' of Rossport, Glenamoy and Pullathomas (as if a dirty big refinery, a dangerous experimental pipeline and a gombeen-facilitated Gas Robbery were gifts beyond price!) joined with solidarity activists from elsewhere in Ireland to pursue a project more sustaining and sustainable than Corrib - the gradual re-afforestation of magnificent beautiful Erris with appropriate species of trees! On Friday 5th December 2008, Ministers Eamon Ryan and Eamon O'Cuiv hosted a 'Forum' at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel, Belmullet, Erris, Co Mayo. Set in the context of the Shell Corrib Gas Project, what the forum is about or what it's supposed to address is not clear. “It's not a decision making forum”, said the chairman, Joe Brosnan. Meanwhile, in another room at the same venue, local residents and community activists hosted a parallel forum, the People's Forum, to address what the Ministers' forum will not address … the substantive issues, which are: Health, Safety & the Environment. The Great Gas Giveaway. Community Consent read full story / add a comment

While Glengad and Shell issues have largely gone from the public eye, and indeed things have quietened down some what, that's not to say that stuff hasn’t been going on, it just doesn’t always make the media. We urgently need a holistic approach to mental health and well being in Ireland. Recent research findings of the Health Research Board revealed that of the almost 2,500 drug related deaths in the past eight years, prescription tranquillisers such as benzodiazepines were involved in more deaths than any other drug, legal or illegal. read full story / add a comment

Shell are tomorrow expected to announce profits of €5.5 billion for the third quarter of the year, representing a 12% increase on profits from this time last year. This means that while people are paying record prices for their fuel, Shell were racking up record profits of around €60 million every day. Recently Bord Gáis applied to increase gas prices by up to 8% which follows a 20% increase which took effect this September. read full story / add a comment
