Niall Harnett will appear at the High Court at Cloverhill in Dublin, Monday 17th August at 11.00am, in order to appeal the extremely restrictive bail terms which were applied to him at Belmullet Court on Thursday, 30th July. Niall is currently serving two consecutive four month jail terms at Castlerea Prison for his part in legitimate acts of civil disobedience and protest against the Corrib Gas Project. read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea campaigners Maura Harrington and Niall Harnett were sentenced to four and eight months in jail respectively at Bellmulet district court today. Both protesters have been convicted for taking action as part of a campaign of peaceful civil disobedience against the ill-fated Corrib Gas Project. Maura was given her four month sentence under Section 8 of the Public Order Act; 'failing to comply with the directions of a Garda'. The sentence was handed down in relation to an incident that occurred duing a protest at Shell's 'landfall' compound gate on 30th August 2008. Niall was sentenced to eight months in relation to two separate incidents. He was given a four month sentence under Section 8 of the Public order act, and another four months under Section 2, for the supposed assault of a Garda. read full story / add a comment

In Bellmullet court on Thursday, five Shell to Sea protesters were up for hearings on charges ranging from last August 2008 to this June 2009. Judge Anderson dismissed several charges on technical points but was very harsh in serving two of the campaigners with four and eight month prison sentences. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday afternoon, Monday the 28th of July, Shell to Sea campaigners organised a demonstration at Glenamoy crossroads Co. Mayo. The crossroads is the access point to Rossport, where Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht affairs Eamon Ó, Cuív had purported to be arriving with the intention of ceremonially launching an already open community center. read full story / add a comment

I arrived in occupied Erris on Friday evening having travelled down to take part in a national meeting of Shell to Sea groups. It had been a busy week for the campaign as the state had reacted to the ongoing resistance to Shell in Erris by seizing fishing boats, sending 7 people to jail without trial and banning two more from Co. Mayo. Not only had hundreds of state forces including the police, navy, air force and possibly the army been deployed to suppress protest in Erris but those of us doing solidarity work elsewhere had found from time to time that we were being followed by the secret police. read full story / add a comment

The footage for the first video, Shell to Sea : Loitering with intent near the Rossport Solidarity Camp, people's champion Margaretta D'Arcy investigates was shot on 29th June close to and at the rear of the Rossport Solidarity Camp, when the behemoth pipe-laying vessel, the Solitaire, was laying the pipe connecting Shell's Glengad compound and the gas head and when the camp was overtly and intimidatory policed with Gardai at the front and rear sandwiching the Shell to Sea activists and it was the latter melange of Guards and their black attired Public Order cohorts that the redoubable and much loved Margaretta D'Arcy confronted. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday in Westport District Court, Judge Mary Devins issued a bench warrant for a Shell to Sea protestor, who was appearing in the High Court, appealing his remanding in custody at the same time. While the Gardaí in Westport didn't seek to have the bench warrant issued and informed the court that protestor Eoin Lawless was appearing in the High Court at that time, Judge Devins insisted upon issuing a bench warrant. read full story / add a comment

This evening, Judge Mary Devins jailed seven Shell to Sea protesters at a special sitting of Ballina District Court. The seven protesters were arrested yesterday along with two others who were released on bail. The four women and three men who were jailed were remanded to appear at court this Friday, 3 July at 10:30 in the morning. The four women's cases will next be held in Court 44 in the Four Courts, while the three men's cases will be held in Harristown. Of the nine arrested yesterday, five were arrested for a lock-on, one for a climbing a tripod and thee others for walking across a road. Sunday June 28th saw the most intense burst of direct action against Shell in Erris so far in this phase of the campaign to thwart the Great Gas Robbery and the destruction of Erris along with its community. A tripod on a road bridge near McGrath's Bar held up vital repair gear for the pipeline winching operation for over four hours. This was followed up by a five-person lock-on on the same road a bit nearer the Shell compound. Together, they delayed winching operations for twelve hours, and there were nine arrests in all. Meanwhile, three Solidarity Campers managed to sneak into the Shell compound at Glengad and get out without being arrested. read full story / add a comment

In any country with a half way critical media, the last few months would have been disastrous for Shell. In a crucial period in Shell’s imposition of an experimental gas pipeline on the people of Erris it emerges that Michael Dwyer, one of the security guards on this project, was part of an attempt to trigger a civil war in Bolivia. Soon after that it became clear that at least three others who had worked as security guards at the Shell compound had travelled to Bolivia with Dwyer and were wanted there for questioning. Some, it emerged, had links to fascist organizations in Eastern Europe. read full story / add a comment

In a reprise of last year's repeated arrests on the waters of Broadhaven Bay, Shell's Gardai have arrested Pat 'the Chief' O'Donnell and his son Jonathan while they were fishing in Broadhaven Bay this morning. Their two boats were commandeered by Gardai and brought to Ballyglass pier under tow and naval escort. Gardai claim that the two boats were 'loitering', the new term for criminalising fishermen exercising their rights to fish in their native waters. Pat's brother Martin is currently still on the water in the bay fishing in his boat. Meanwhile the Solitaire is less than an hour away from arriving off Glengad. read full story / add a comment

The last few days have seen some very interesting developments in the situation after Pat O'Donnell's boat was sunk. First of all, we had an appeal from Pat for State protection (see below) to the Gardai on Sunday. This was read out in full on local radio on Wednesday, and it went into some other media coverage too. Following on from this, the Gardai called out to Mr. O'Donnell, and asked him what he wanted in terms of protection – his reply was: a 500 metre exclusion zone around his boat, and a Garda RIB to accompany him when he goes out. They agreed to the second one, and didn't really comment on the first(!). Two swimmers were also arrested this evening Wednesday, despite being well outside Shell's so-called exclusion zone. Well, the 200+ Gardai up here have to justify their existence somehow... read full story / add a comment

The pipe-laying ship the Solitaire has declared itself that it intends to be in Broadhaven Bay at 12pm tomorrow. It is now urgent that people get to Mayo to stop Shell laying the offshore section of pipe to the Corrib gasfield well-head from the Glengad compound. read full story / add a comment

Four Rossport Solidarity Camp residents and Shell to Sea activists were up in court yesterday on various public order charges, arising from incidents that happened on the 10th and 11th of June 2009. Judge Mary Devins proceeded to hear the cases, reaching a verdict and sentence in three of them. A fourth case was adjourned until the 2nd of July. read full story / add a comment

A Shell to Sea kayaker who paddled out from the shore near the Rossport Solidarity Camp was arrested and detained by Shell Security personnel at about 5pm today, Tue 16th June. Two security guards waded into the water, captured the man in his canoe and dragged him to shore and onto the Shell site, where he was forcibly held until Gardaí handcuffed him and detained him in a Garda van. Despite the fact that the captured man was given no reason for his arrest and detention by either Shell or the Gardai; Garda Sgt. Kieran Lavelle MY2 denied later that the man was arrested at all, but that he was being held 'for his own safety'. read full story / add a comment
