Anti G8 Activities13th-15th June: Republican Sinn Fein will be holding an Alternative to the G8 Summit, an Anti-Imperialist Forum, in the Conway Mill Belfast, on June 13, 14 and 15. A number of speakers from both a Republican as well as a unionist perspective will be there as well as speakers the academic world. As the Gaza conflict rages on, the Palestinians demand for human rights and return to their homeland continues for many outside of the occupied territories. Millions of refugees scattered throughout the Middle East live in refugee camps rife with violence, extreme poverty and no support or assistance. This twinned with getting stuck in the crossfire of many host-country conflicts such as Syria, Lebanon and Iraq make their situation even more intractable. When the opportunity to work does open up, the same people are greeted with more exploitation in trying to make a livelihood. Britain has a shameful track record of exporting arms, along with crowd control equipment, to torture regimes in countries such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. These arms, equipment, counter insurgency techniques, are to be tested again in the laboratory of British Occupied Ireland, something that came to halt during the peace process. Britain cannot claim to be on the side of peace and democracy while their Tory PM, sponsored in the last election by Britain's industrial war complex, acts as a travelling salesman for the arms industry. So called Syrian "freedom fighters" claiming to be rebelling against atrocities committed by the Assad government are seen here massacring wounded men on the ground. If that's not an atrocity, what is? RTE have been reporting in a very one sided manner on Syria, painting these "rebels" in a good light while putting the boot into the Assad "regime" at every opportunity. Our Taniste went on a one sided tirade against the leadership in Syria for 15 minutes of the prime time program recently before going to the UN to urge them to create a no fly zone in Syria.
