Britain's Dirty Wars
international / anti-war / opinion/analysis Friday May 24, 2013 12:36 by Brian Clarke   image 1 image   video 1 video file
In 2006, it became public knowledge, that Britain's SS(secret services) helped the IRA organize 'human bomb' attacks, in a tactic involving, forcing civilians, to drive car bombs into British army checkpoints with devastating consequence. This was just one of a series, in an evolution of guerrilla warfare techniques, that left many keen observers scratching their heads wondering, who was friend or foe and whose side, several senior British intelligence operatives were on. read full story / add a comment

Last week, we made our way to the book launch of Dirty Wars - the world is a battlefield" by former New York Catholic Worker now celebrated investigatory journalist Jeremy Scahill http://dirtywars.org/jeremy-scahill

Jeremy gave an excellent speech naming Guantanamo as the most visible point of a massive iceberg of a U.S. policy of torture and assassination. So if Obama closes Guantanamo and escalates his assassination program while maintaining other black site torture chambers http://tinyurl.com/ap9ayy7 we will know our work is far from over. read full story / add a comment

Sun newspaper, Wed May 22 2013:
There is still [a British] appetite to influence world affairs.
UK troops are supporting operations in Mali and Somalia and are on stand-by to aid the government in Libya.
During his two-day trip, Mr Hammond congratulated Brits at Koulikoro base, who are deployed with Irish troops for the first time since 1922. He said the Queen’s 2011 trip to Ireland brought a change in Anglo-Irish relations.
Sgt Gerry Setright, 49, of the Irish Defence Forces, said of working with the Brits: “It’s been a pleasure. We are closer than people think.”

Apple claim to have negotiated an agreement with the Irish government whereby they paid 2% tax or less. In this time of deep austerity, it's time to kick out these US tax dodgers and instead focus on giving support to indigenous small businesses. read full story / add a comment

A commoner in British Occupied Ireland, can be designated a “terrorist” on the secret, unaccountable dictat of the unelected British Viceroyal Villiers, without notice and without a trial. Under CMPs(Closed Material Procedures) any Irish person may be jailed, simply on vaguely-defined, highly paid “material support,” against any person or group, labeled by the Viceroyal as “terrorist.” Any political dissent, such as wearing green, as in a recent incident, or singing a 'Celtic Song', or holding a piece of paper at an Easter ceremony, can be labeled as “terrorism” or “material support for terrorism,”

Press statement: Joe Higgins TD

Joe Higgins TD seeks topical issue debate tomorrow in Dáil on Bus Eireann strike

Challenge Minister Varadkar on his desire to engineer privatisation of company

Despite possibility of talks there is no basis to call of strike until cuts in pay and conditions are rescinded

Following on from his previous statement of support for the striking Bus Eireann workers and his subsequent visits to the picket lines in Broadstone and Busaras Joe Higgins TD has today submitted a request to the Ceann Comhairle for a topical issue debate to be held in the Dáil tomorrow on the dispute:

"I want an opportunity tomorrow to put directly to Minister Varadkar the points that the workers on the picket line made to me about this dispute. It is undeniable that Minister Varadkar supports the wholesale privatisation of Bus Eireann and is willing to use his position in government to help engineer that end. I want to put to him directly points that were made to me about the levels of six figure executive pay in the firm, recent pay hikes these top brass have obtained and the €70 million that has been banked by CIE. It has been raised with me and party colleagues by some of the workers that the government want the company to financially sink as a prelude to selling it off. read full story / add a comment

The above title does not mean I understand her reasons for supporting DynCorp. In fact, it could just as easily be reworded to reflect a question I myself have regarding the strange reluctance of the State Department to act regarding a corporation that has participated in some of the most deplorable acts a corporation could – and we are talking big wealthy corporations here. Except, they do obviously favor the company in question, and support them. As one of the top three US defense contractors receiving money from the US government, DynCorp, has sunk to depths lower than drug dealers, slave traders, rapists or child abusers as they have done them all and more. read full story / add a comment

Just as we are seeing climate chaos change to climate catastrophe, we may also see job chaos change to job catastrophe. We are entering an era of technological change which has the potential to create havoc in an already seriously undermined world of employment. It has become a well-worn cliché to declare that the robots are coming but it is necessary to consider seriously how the creeping technologisation of production and services is going to affect many areas of employment considered today to be relatively safe from the machines. read full story / add a comment
