Polish workers are being headhunted to help clear a path and build the road through the Tara complex. They are being headhunted by Irish-Spanish consortium, called Eurolink, with the help of Irish trade unions. The winner of the tendering process will supply half the money for the M3 but will be able to operate two toll booths on it, for 30-40 years. Most of this money will not be returned into the public purse, but will leave the country, as will many of the workers who come here to build it, along with their fat paycheques. read full story / add a comment

Suicide by dousing oneself in petrol is a relatively recent option.
Logically since refined petroleum has only been available to the mass population for a relatively short time. Just as long as Irish people have enjoyed the institution of the christian brothers they have been able to purchase parafin and diesel.

The first newspaper headline grabbing suicide with petrol was on October 5th 1963 in Saigon, a buddhist monk Quang Duc had had enough of the South Vietnamese government led by Ngo Dinh Diem.
His action was copied more times than anyone cares to remember.
In May 1966, 5 such suicides were recorded in just one week. a 17 year old girl followed a 19 year old girl who herself followed another monk.

As the hypocritical farce which was the 26 county states dishonest attempt to misrepresent and hijack the anniversary of the Easter Rising fades for another year the real work of reclaiming the republic for the people carries on in the background . The National 1916 commemoration Committee was founded in 2001 with the express purpose of commemorating and remembering the ideals , aims and sacrifice of the 1916 rising in a dignified and fitting manner as the 100th anniversary of this momentous event draws ever nearer . It is essential Irish people are made aware of the yawning gulf between the aims of 1916 and the reality of the corrupt, servile neo-colonial 26 county state , which stands in fundamental opposition to everything 1916 was about - the sovereign ownership of Ireland, its territory and resources, by the people of Ireland . With the ongoing foreign occupation of our northern territory , the theft of our national resources - gas , oil and the imminent privatisation of our water resources in the north , the use of Shannon to facilitate mass murder , kidnap and imperialist ventures throughout the globe it can be stated quite honestly that Ireland today remains a subjugated land , outside of the ownership of the Irish people . Irish sovereignty in all its forms has been cast aside by native capitalists in ignnominious servitude to foreign masters and landlords . The National 1916 Commemoration Committee urges all Irish citizens to stand against these multiple usurpations of our sovereignty , to reject the states hypocritical ceremonies in future and stand with them in commemorating the ideals and aims of 1916 . From Madrid to Buenos Aires, from Caracas to la Paz, throughout the spanish speaking world - governments and political representatives send messages of "get well soon!" to Fidel Castro who has now placed the ink stamp of leadership in the hands of his younger brother Raul.

The health of Fidel Castro is intrinsically tied to the health of the state of Cuba. & he's an old man now just short of his 80th birthday. He is in fact the "grand old man".
& his death will see many changes long expected and equally as long feared. Already Cuban exile groups mostly found in Florida USA, led by the charismatic Gloria Estafan have announced plans to democratise the state when he goes, and modernise it in the best shiney way turning the clock back as far it will go. read full story / add a comment

I am very sad to hear about Ted Grant. I met him first in the late 1960's and from him I came to understand the basics of marxism. He defended the method of marxism throughout the entire difficult period of the post war period. In particular he defended the orientation to the mass organizations of the working class and the struggle for the revolutionary program within the working class. This laid the basis for maintaining a working class orientation and analysis and program in Ireland where I lived over many of these difficult years. I have great memories of Ted explaining his ideas at meetings and conferences and in discussions.

on the 26th of July 1956 Nassar read the proclamation in Cairo by which his popular government liberated the Suez Canal from joint Anglo-French imperialist stockholders.

It was one of the most significant nationalisation declarations of history leading to an attack by French & British troops on Egypt and then their sudden abandonment by the USA. 1956 for many proved the watershed (forgive the pun) which forever locked Britian and France out of their imperialist past and proved their inability to act "on their own" if the USA did not support their actions. read full story / add a comment

Today those elected to the Peruvian government earlier this year to serve till 2011 must each swear an oath of allegiance. Its part of a series of constitutional rituals which will lead up to the presidential inauguration this coming Friday which is also Peru's national day.

The formula for the oath is very simple - (they often are) - each deputy takes his place in turn & recorded by stenographers and pictured on live TV recites the formula of loyalty. But already some deputies oaths have been rejected :- read full story / add a comment

The ruling in today’s third Supreme Court decision in the Carrickmines Castle saga has left the door open for a full constitutional challenge to the National Monuments Act 2004, as a whole, which will be heard by the Supreme Court in relation to the Hill of Tara and the M3 motorway on October 11. read full story / add a comment

The Supreme Court will deliver its third judgment tomorrow morning at 10.45AM in the Carrickmines Castle/M50 saga, and the decision will have a major impact on the Hill of Tara/M3 case now being appealed to the Supreme Court. I am one of the legion of the amused who watched as (mainly British) critics lashed "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" before they'd even seen it - a fact which in itself speaks volumes for their motives. I have seen it, and in terms of historical accuracy it seems pretty close to what I've read in IRA veterans accounts and heard from their mouths. True, in real life there were some decent individuals - there always are. There was a Black and Tan who allowed an IRA captive to nip in and see his dying brother when the Tan's officer's back was turned. Yet there were also ones like those who slit Kathleen Clarke's sister's hand from fingers to wrist with a razor. I think critics of Loach would do well for their own sakes not to make too much noise about the depiction of the Tans. read full story / add a comment

Celtic warriors, old Irish saints, famous wells, High Kings palaces and rare old bridges all came to life recently in the Ballintra-Laghey area when a group of primary school children went on a mystery heritage tour. The tour was organised by youth worker Paul McGroary and staff from the Ballintra-Laghey Cross Community Youth Project with the support of Keith Corcoran from Community Creations and special guest Charlie Gallagher.
