Leader of the Green party Trevor Sargent and the Mayor of Galway, Niall O’Brolchain are to hold a ceremony in Galway to congratulate Rossport Five campaigner Willie Corduff on his recent receipt of the Goldman Prize for the Environment. They will meet with Willie this Thursday 10th May at 12.00 outside St Nicholas’s Church and all are welcome to attend. The Goldman prize is internationally renowned. It is the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for the environment. Willie was awarded the €93,000 prize in a ceremony in San Francisco two weeks ago. During his US trip he had the opportunity to put his case to leading US political figures. It was awarded in recognition of the Shell to Sea Campaign, which opposes the controversial ‘Corrib Gas’ project in Erris Co. Mayo. read full story / add a comment ![]()

As part of the ongoing IPSC campaign against the Grafton group, who own Woodie's and Atlantic Homecare, and their aiding and abetting of the Israeli economy through the sale of Israeli manufactured goods, chiefly Keter plastic garden sheds and wheelbarrows, eight of our Galway activists picketed the Atlantic Homecare branch in the Wellpark Retail Park and the Woodies one in the Galway Retail Park, eliciting, except for some malodorous shite and abuse, a sweet response from passing pedestrians and especially in our walk from Atlantic Homecare to Woodies, with all flags flying, a very sweet one from motorists. read full story / add a comment

Activists from the Galway branch of the IPSC spent seven hours yesterday outside Lynch's castle in Shop st leafleting pedestrians and encouraging them to boycott Israeli Blood Diamonds and Woodie's/Atlantic Homecare DIY stores on account of their unethical selling of Israeli Keder plastic garden products, we've been at it outside Lynch's castle every Saturday for months now, because there's something more to our conscienses than the blind eye and repellent hypocrisy, not so, unfortunately, in the case of the passerby who, focused and full of hate slimed us with a "Sieg Heil" as he passed by. read full story / add a comment ![]()

"The Palestinian intifada is a war of colonial liberation. We Israelis enthusiastically chose to become a colonialist society, ignoring international treaties, expropriating lands, transferring settlers from Israel to the occupied territories, engaging in theft and finding justicication for all these activities ... we established an apartheid regime." (Michael Ben-Yair, Israeli Attorney General 1993-36). Yesterday, for six hours, activists from the Galway branch of the IPSC manned an information stall outside Lynch's castle in Shop Street, gathering signatures for an Israeli Blood Diamonds petition and ... read full story / add a comment

Iggy Madden of Iggy Madden Haulage Ltd, Galway, crony, “close friend and confidante,” whatever, of shady Frank Fahey, was the target of Galway Shell to Sea’s concern this afternoon on account of the imminent removal by his firm of some 660,000 metric tonnes of blanket bog from Shell’s proposed gas refinery in Bellanaboy and dumped in a Bord Na Mona cutaway bog in Bangor Erris despite serious ecological concerns for such a venture. As karma or serendipity would have it, the great man himself was to hand when 13 Shell to Sea activists, prior to a picketing of his depot, were handing in a letter of protest to his docklands offices. Instead of hearing our plaints with a fair ear we were verbally abused, instead, and subjected to diplomacy of the bar room, redneck, kind ; “I’ll shove yer camera up yer arse” "Do ya have a job" etc, etc. So it goes. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Members of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign manned stalls in Galway and Limerick on Saturday to highlight the clandestine trade in Israeli diamonds. Irish consumers are unaware that most of the diamonds sold in Ireland are crafted in Apartheid Israel, the worlds leading exporter of cut/polished diamonds. This year gemstone exports from Apartheid Israel are expected to approximate $18-$20 billion or more than 150% of Apartheid Israel’s $12 billion military budget for 2007. Diamond exports comprise 30% of Apartheid Israel’s total manufacturing exports and are the backbone of the apartheid regime’s economy. Consumers need to be made aware that when they purchase diamonds they are likely to be supporting the illegal occupation and brutal subjugation of the Palestinian people. read full story / add a comment

Galway Blazers Foxhunters have returned to hunt on the Bishop of Clonfert’s farm in Loughrea, Co Galway, they spent two hours there on Saturday last.. Members of the Galway Blazers hunt were spotted on the church land again by an observer who rang the hunt saboteurs. Apparently badger setts were also disturbed according to the observer. We are investigating this and are urging our members ring or write to the bishop. We have photos of the hunters on the land. We do not know whether the hunt had permission from the bishop to be on the land .We appeal to the Bishops compassionate nature(if he has one) to take steps to protect wildlife on the Catholic Church lands. We will also be contacting the Wildlife Officers regarding the protection of Badgers. 'Press Officer Bernie Wright ' we are disgusted at the apathy and lack of compassion towards sentient creatures displayed by the Catholic Church, its obvious the blazers were not denied access after a similar incident a few years back.' read full story / add a comment |
