galway / miscellaneous / press release Friday February 06, 2009 12:55 by Volunteer
As the country gears up for increasing economic and social pressures, Ireland is likely to see a rise in campaigning from people of all walks of life. This coupled with the increased awareness of our responsibilities to be active citizens, has inspired two Galway based agencies to join forces in creating a new Advocacy Internship programme.

SpunOut.ie, the Galway based national youth charity and the Community Knowledge Initiative at NUIG are launching the new Advocacy Internship programme to give young people an opportunity to work on promoting activism, awareness and civic engagement in the community and to encourage others to get involved in creating positive change.

Last Saturday, members of the Galway Palestine Children's Appeal were "overwhelmed" by the public response to their appeal for humanitarian aid for the children and people of Gaza - expecting one 40ft container to be filled with medical supplies, household goods, non perishable food, clothes and toys, a further two had to be ordered and to ease the pressure, a request was broadcast by the local radio station, Galway Bay FM, for donors to procrastinate their visit to the drop-off point at the Black Box theatre until the delivery of the third container - this morning, at 7AM two of the stuffed containers started their journey of mercy and there is a large stockpile of aid awaiting the arrival of the third.

Including an operating table from Letterkenny Hospital, medical staff in the west donated money and supplies and businesses such as the Galway Radisson Hotel gifted 100 duvets and pillows.

Outraged and revulsed at the wanton butchery in Gaza and wanting to do more than wring our hands in impotent empathy, a number of concerned people and activists two weeks ago formed a flying picket and for the last two Saturday's protested outside Galway stores selling Israeli products (and one pro-Zionist fast food eatery), urging shoppers with conscience to boycott Israeli goods and food stuffs until such time - to mention just a few our concerns - as Israel complies with international and humanitarian law, UN resolutions, Fourth Geneva Convention, withdraws from the Occupied Palestinian Territories and dismantles its illegal West Bank colonies

To encourage people of good conscience to boycott Israeli goods and produce, yesterday, activists and supporters of the Free Palestine Campaign picketed nine of unethical companies profiteering from their sale of Israeli foodstuffs, goods and support of Zionism, distributed information leaflets, garnering warm public support and severly embarrassing the Filthy Nine in the process. read full story / add a comment

With the death toll from Israel's genocidal attack on Gaza now approaching 1,000 and the "international community" standing idly by twiddling its hypocrisy, Galway Free Palestine Campaign in empathy with the Gazans did an eight hour protest in Shop Street yesterday and will continue to do so until the killing frenzy stops.

At least one forthright man is not prepared to mouth the usual inanities about "restraint" and all that nonsense but unequivocally condemned Israel for its genocide: "The number of victims in Gaza is increasing by the day... The situation is untenable. It's genocide ... the Palestinian people have been subjected to subhuman treatment for decades and this (the Israeli offensive) is going to make matters worse." (Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, President of the UN General Assembly)

The Galway Alliance Against War marked the 7th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan yesterday, Thursday 20th November and called on the Irish government to withdraw Irish troops from this occupied country. Last Saturday's information stall in Shop Street was again focused on EU complicity with Israeli war crimes against Palestinians, particularly Gazans; it's almost a year ago now since Commissioner-General for United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, Karen Koning AbuZayd, warned: “Gaza is on the threshold of becoming the first territory to be intentionally reduced to a state of abject destitution,” citing the EU and international community as accomplices in the barbaric siege of Gaza . Despite the fact that the Fourth Geneva Convention defines collective punishment as a war crime, the EU runs empathetically with the hare in condemning such a crime whilst, at the same time hunting, cheek by jowl, with the hounds who perpetrate such criminality. read full story / add a comment

Criminally complicit in facilitating the transit of CIA torture flights via pit stop Ireland, it's reported that the Government is shaping up to do a cap-in-hand spineless slither to "the incoming US administration on the issue of extraordinary renditions and on the US military's use of Shannon Airport ... (and a) Cabinet committee will examine and strengthen legal provisions to ensure that gardaí and airport authorities have adequate legal powers for search and inspection of aircraft. This may involve strengthening the provisions of the Air Navigation and Transport Acts." (Irish Times).

"Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French. It is wrong and in-human to impose the Jews on the Arabs" (Mahatma Gandhi)

"I believe that Gandhi's views were the most enlightened of all the political men of our time. We should strive to do things in his spirit: not to use violence for fighting for our cause, but by non-participation of anything you believe is evil" (Albert Einstein)

In weather, more the revenge of Gaia than ultra bad, after their testimony at the Galway Inter-Faith Alliance organised; A Commemoration of the Life and Work of Mahatma Gandhi, three Palestinians joined Free Palestine Campaign activists at their Shop Street info stall last Saturday, Dr. George Rishmawi, Director of Siraj, Center for Holy Land Studies, Dr. Mohamed Altawil, Dr. of Psychology, University of Hertfordshire, UK and Tareq Natsheh of the Palestine Progressive Youth Union. read full story / add a comment
