Bóthar na Saoirse (The Road to Freedom) is a trilogy of documentaries on the lives of Dan Breen, Tom Barry and Ernie O’Malley, iconic hardline republicans from the War of Independence. It begins on Wednesday on TG4 with My Fight For Irish Freedom, Scéal Dan Breen, the colourful and complex South Tipperary guerrilla who started the War of Independence at Soloheadbeg in 1919 on the day the First Dail sat in Dublin. Forced to flee Tipperary he joined Michael Collins’ hit squad in Dublin but then opposed the Treaty negotiated by Collins. Later he joined De Valera’s Fianna Fail and was the first anti-Treaty activist to enter Dail Eireann and take the oath of allegiance he had fought to abolish. read full story / add a comment

Several hundred people took part in "A Spectacle Of Defiance And Hope" in Dublin on the night of Friday 10th December to protest the way the government have cut funding to vital community services. It's cold comfort that yesterday's inhuman budget was the last sting of a vicious, dying government, chilling to realise it was allowed to flourish and pass by the broad mass of the Irish people standing idly by and not engaging in mass protest.? Yesterdays proceedings outside the Dáil were mild, ultra-mild and weak when compared to the mass protests in Greece and France and the fact that the EU/ECB/IMF attacks on our poor, vulnerable, working classes and middle classes, through their willing government catspaws, are far more severe here than the aforementioned countries.? read full story / add a comment

There are currently around 100 student activists occupying the grounds of the Department of Education, on Marlborough St., Dublin. At the time of writing there is an open space discussion happening on the subject of "alternative education". Gardai have locked the gate and are not allowing additional participants to enter. However the atmosphere inside is peaceful and constructive. Come down to Marlborough St. (off Talbot St.) to show your solidarity with the activists inside! The Surprise Conference 2010, is an event organized by a group of autonomous individuals with the view to starting a more open minded conversation about the future of Irish education that the one that is currently taking place. We feel that the current education system is expensive and inefficient and rather than simply making financial cuts we should make long term structural changes. read full story / add a comment

Today in Dublin, in a massive demonstration not witnessed in Ireland since 2003 when over 100,000 marched in protest against the then impending criminal attack on Iraq by the US, a similar number marched in protest against their ongoing immiseration by a criminal Irish government, hell bent on forcing on them and the most vulnerable in Irish society the gambling debts of their cronies in the financial and property developer sector of the Irish economy. read full story / add a comment

Last night at a Special General Meeting, members of the Dublin Food Co-Op voted overwhelmingly to boycott Israeli goods. This was the third attempt over the last 2 years to bring in a boycott of Israeli goods. Previous attempts failed to reach consensus or when put to a vote failed to reach the required 75%. Last night the mood was clearly in favour with a final tally of 50 for to about 6 against. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions have called a national demonstration on 27th November in Dublin which will see tens of thousands take to the streets. But many are very unhappy with the ICTU leadership and a march called on the basis of 'fairer' cuts and a return to the disasterous policy of Social Partnership. The 1% Network will be taking part in the demonstration not to support the demands of the ICTU leadership but to outline what we see as the alternative. This is not in the expectation that the ICTU leadership can be convinced but because we want to make the argument to the thousands of workers who will take part that it is up to all of us to organise what is needed, a general strike, despite that leadership. read full story / add a comment
