Just back from the high court where 12 named protestors were injuncted for blockading bin trucks. Although I wasn't in the courtroom myself, I did talk to several people who had been inside and their interpretation of events was uniform. The 12 undertook not to do the same again and the judge ruled that they had purged their contempt. The city council also sought to make their injunction permanent against blockading. GARDAI HAVE arrested a further 12 anti-bin tax campaigners in Fingal. Three were arrested in Clonsilla and a further nine - including a husband and wife - were arrested in the Huntstown area. Two of those arrested appeared before the high court this afternoon, the rest are due to appear tomorrow. This is the latest Council manoeuvre against the Anti-Bin Tax Campaign. This follows the 5,000 strong solidarity demonstration outside Mountjoy Prison last night, where Joe Higgnis and Clare Daly are detained. read full story / add a comment

The Greens: Waging Class War On Behalf Of The Rich. The Green Party stated today that it does not support the position of the Socialist Party on refusing to pay service charges. However, Green Party Leader Trevor Sargent, TD stated, “We support financial incentives and the use of reasonable volume levies to encourage waste minimisation, re-use, recycling and composting for householders and the commercial sector alike.” This gobbleiegook translates as Green Party support for a flat rate tax. The Campaign against Bin Charges in Dublin continued over the weekend of 20th/21st September with a number of protests taking place in local areas in response to the jailing of Joe Higgins and Clare Daly. Bertie Ahern was also heckled at a Robert Emmett Commemoration on Saturday by anti Bin Charges campaigners. General Prisons Board was established in Ireland in 1878. Following the foundation of the State, its functions were absorbed by the Department of Justice. The Board was abolished in 1928. In 1969 the Public Services Organisation Review Group recommended the establishment of executive agencies assigned to Ministers but operating under the general supervision of part time boards. read full story / add a comment
