The situation in Libya is not what it seems as reported by the mainstream press -the same press that has promoted all the previous wars with some lame excuse or another. The MSM media likes to teach the public to think only in black in white. So if you oppose NATO, you love Gadaffi. Actually it possible to see both as bad. But the long and short of it all is that it really all just amounts to a modern form of the Class War. Notice how our liberties in the West are disappearing along with the social gains achieved over the last century of labor struggles. The Libya things is mainly an oil grab. It is also because Gadaffi was not an obedient dictator and it is also because it had the highest standard of living in Africa and very generous welfare and last but not least it was not adhering to the NeoLiberal agenda and the free market. The same ideology that has ruined all our economies and is being used as the excuse to take away all our gains and make us worker far longer and for less. So the purpose of this feature is to present the alternative and to provide some background analysis to what is going on and happened so far read full story / add a comment

Your article in the summer 2011 edition of ‘Emma’ entitled ‘A Black Spring’ expresses concern about the possibility of a Muslim Brotherhood dominated government in Egypt in the future after the transition period. You conclude that the easiest aspect of the fight is with the violent jihadists; and whilst Bin laden is dead, the doctrine of jihad lives on. In another article* you say: “...the gradualist approach is far more likely to win the prize of state power. All that Khomeini did before he came to power in Iran was to preach the merits of a society based on Islamic law. He did not engage in terrorism. Yet he and his followers took over Iran – a feat far greater than bin Laden ever achieved. In Iran the violence came later.” In reality, however, ‘doctrine’ alone was not the reason behind the brutal Islamic movement’s rise to political power. In Iran, for example, the rise of Islamism was aided by the US-led foreign policy of creating a green or Islamic belt around the then Soviet Union during the Cold War. At a conference in Guadeloupe, Western powers decided to back Islamism at the expense of a left-leaning revolution that was crushed in order for the Islamic Republic of Iran to establish itself. In fact, to secure power, the regime slaughtered an entire generation. As a result, we have witnessed the rise of the political Islamic movement for several decades. read full story / add a comment

Several boats that are part of Freedom Flotilla Two - Stay Human have been detained and prohibited to sail by the Greek Coast Guard, including the U.S., Canadian and Spanish Boats to Gaza, and the Greek government has prohibited any boats from sailing to Gaza from Greek ports. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine calls upon the Greek government to immediately end this active complicity with the Israeli siege on Gaza and release the boats to join the Flotilla to Gaza, and calls on all popular forces and movements in Greece and internationally to demand that the Greek government end its participation in the illegal Israeli blockade and allow the Freedom Flotilla to sail!
The Greek people have demonstrated, time and again, their firm solidarity with the Palestinian people, taking to the streets en masse to stand with the people of Palestine against Israeli massacres, invasions and wars. The people of Greece have also taken to their streets in the millions in the past months, and Greek workers risen in escalating general strikes over the past weeks, to stand against an EU/IMF economic austerity plan for their country which will mean misery, subservience, and suffering for Greece's people. read full story / add a comment

Last week, newly-arrived in Athens as part of the US Boat to Gaza project, our team of activists gathered for nonviolence training. We are here to sail to Gaza, in defiance of an Israeli naval blockade, in our ship, "The Audacity of Hope." Our team, and nine other ships' crews from countries around the world, want Israel to end its lethal blockade of Gaza by letting our crews through to shore to meet with Gazans. The US ship will bring over 3,000 letters of support to a population suffering its fifth continuous decade of de facto occupation, now in the form of a military blockade controlling Gaza's sea and sky, punctuated by frequent deadly military incursions, that has starved Gaza's economy and people to the exact level of cruelty considered acceptable to the domestic population of our own United States, Israel's staunchest ally.

It has been weird being in Dublin security city the past week. It reminds me a lot of
growing up in the police state of Queensland/Australia in the late '70's.
On Thursday, I was stopped and searched by police five times before noon and shaken down by the Special Branch 3 times over the two daze. My poster (photo of Giusepe Conlon...with the words "Remember Giuseppe Conlon and All Victims of Empire") remains in police custody,
confiscated by an Inspector under State Security legislation.

Yesterday morning, I had the poster that appears in this clip of Giuseppe Conlon with the wording
"Remember Giuseppe Conlon and all Victims of Empire" confiscated by a Gardai inspector under some state security legislation.
I had been phoned by the Gardai about 11 pm the night before saying a friend of mine was in custody chargeed woth a pUblic Order offense and needed a lawyer and that he wouldbe appearing at the new court on Infimary Rd. I had been unable to get back to where I was staying as the city was closed down and had crashed on another friend's floor.
As I made my way to the court Thursday morning, a young Gard said she would not let me through her checkpoint with the sign. I asked if she could hang on to it and I would be back in 4o mins. She agreed.
After realsing I could not cross the road I returned to that checkpoint and the sign was gone. She pointed out the inspector that had seized the sign. I approached him and I said if read full story / add a comment

The Galway Alliance Against War is to hold two protests in the city next week to mark the visit of Queen Elizabeth and President Barak Obama to Ireland. Over the last year workers in Iran have struggled on several fronts. The subsidy cuts coupled with the crisis in world capitalism are driving living standards down for the majority of Iranians. Basic food stuffs are rising in price at a phenomenal rate, with bread rising a massive 25% and unsubsidised fuel increasing 7 fold. This is in a country with the third largest oil reserves in the world and the necessary refining abilities to produce cheap and affordable fuel for the entire population. The sanctions regime continues to undermine Iranian industry, robbing many workers of their jobs whilst the elite continue to amass great wealth. We stand with the Iranian working class fighting austerity and call for an end to all sanctions. We also call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners. read full story / add a comment
