Outrage over the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin compounds daily as the killer remains free, facing no criminal charges for gunning down the unarmed black youth from Miami Gardens, Florida. On February 26, George Zimmerman, a white self-appointed captain of a "neighborhood watch" team shot Martin, a black high-school student. Police and local prosecutors never charged Zimmerman and accepted his cynical claim that he shot the unarmed youth in "self-defense." Thousands have demonstrated around the country, particularly after police tapes of 911 calls by Zimmerman were released, showing that he was stalking Martin. But the main thrust of liberals is to divert the protests into a movement for gun control laws and to get rid of "Stand Your Ground" laws such as Florida's which make it legal to shoot in self-defense. The ruling-class response deliberately tries to obscure the key fact that this was racist murder. Trayvon Martin was killed for the "crime" of "walking while black." read full story / add a comment

Elba squat was raided on March 16th, 2012, by henchmen of a private security company who received assistance from the Polish police. The project was established in 2004. The Finnish company Stora Enso (the owner of the premises) has been well aware of Elba’s existence and activity and, after protests two years ago, the presence of the squatters in the area was accepted. No user of the building was notified of a scheduled date of eviction, so the incursion came as a total surprise for the people living in the squat, which is the biggest and oldest active social and cultural centre in Warsaw. read full story / add a comment

An issue that dwarfs in death and suffering the murders of 911 that you will not hear politicians debating or newspapers or news broadcasts covering is that one human being is dying every nine second from starvation in the world as it is presently spiritually, politically and economically organized. One person dies every nine seconds from starvation in a world that produces 3,500 calories per person per day and 4.2 pounds of food per person per day. That is premeditated, intentional, unjustified homicidal violence, murder. That is the warring of one group or class or cast of human beings against another. That is class warfare of the most hideous kind—class genocide. Yet, not a peep, let alone an impassioned daily outcry, from those who own the microphones and those who are granted access to them. Claiming Our Future is campaigning for the introduction of measures to tax wealth. As you all know it is very important that there is a counter argument to the austerity approach being pursued by government.
The type of tax options that are being proposed include
1. A levy on assets and property worth over €1 million
2. High net worth Irish citizens paying their dues here so that the number of tax exiles decreases
3. Eliminating tax breaks for those with high incomes so that they pay their fair share
4. A levy on financial transactions (Tobin Tax)
5. A higher tax rate on incomes over €100k
