IRISH POLITICIANS BETRAY GAZA
Irish political representatives shamefully abstain in crucial UN vote on Gaza

Ireland and 16 other EU countries abstained from the UN Human Rights Council resolution to set up a commission of inquiry into Gaza. Apparently over "concerns that the draft text was unbalanced, inaccurate and prejudges the outcome of the investigation." The resolution was approved with 29 votes in favour, one against (the United States) and 17 abstentions.
More details see here
Ireland's ambassador to the UN Patricia O'Brien today said Ireland had "a very valid reason not to support the resolution."
Yeah right Patricia, and the reason was our masters in the US embassy told us not to vote in favour and our spineless politicians meekly obeyed.

Update 24/07/2014:Israeli forces shelled a shelter at a UN-run school today, killing at least 15 people including children and elderly and UN staff. Ban Ki Moon states "I strongly condemn this act."

24th July: So far Israel has killed over 760 Palestinians including
over 150 children. This count is increasing by the hour.

Yesterday independent TD's Clare Daly and Mick Wallace carried out a protest designed to highlight use of Shannon for military purposes yesterday. They were later released. Daly has vowed to hold the state to account for it's complicity in US military warmongering in the middle east and elsewhere. Fair play to Clare and Mick. ... read full story / add a comment

In the past week, Israeli military forces have escalated their offensive on the Gaza Strip. Israeli warplanes have increasingly targeted houses, civilian-populated areas and civilian facilities in the Gaza strip. Israeli warplanes have destroyed a number of houses while their residents were inside, without any prior warnings, killing and wounding many Palestinian civilians.

As the death toll in Israel’s latest onslaught on Gaza surpasses 260, actions have been called around Ireland taking place this week and next. It’s important that as many people as possible turn out to show their solidarity with the Palestinians people under attack, their opposition to this latest round of brutal attacks on Gaza, and their anger at political inaction and media misreporting of the issue. ... read full story / add a comment

Yesterday afternoon tragically 295 people lost their lives. What we do know is that if the Kiev fascist regime had any sort of tenuous proof that the separatists had shot it down the Western media would be screaming bloody murder. Instead they are quite coy and initially qualified it with the word accident. And accident of sorts it may well have been because it looks like this may have been more than yet another provocation by US/NATO via their neo-Nazi puppets in Kiev to widen the conflict but in fact may have been a direct attempt to assassinate president Putin because it has been reported his presidential plane flew over the same region approximately 30 minutes earlier. More on this later. But first some details on the lead up to this. ... read full story / add a comment

At the time of writing, around 36 people have been killed in bloody airstrikes in Gaza, including at least 9 children. Supreme Court Refuses Argentina Debt Case and Validates Hedge Fund Predatory Behavior. The US Supreme Court denied Argentina's appeal for a hearing today, leaving intact a lower court ruling that validates predatory behavior targeted towards countries in financial distress. The high court also denied a related appeal on behalf of the more than 92% of bond holders who had accepted Argentina's restructuring deal. In a final blow, the court also decided that hedge funds can access information on where Argentina holds financial assets around the world. The International Monetary Fund (IMF), legitimate Wall Street investors and the US government had sided with Argentina because of the case's impact on debt restructuring, poor country access to credit and global financial stability. ... read full story / add a comment

(An article on the protest in Brazil against the World Cup, aswell as a small campaign in the southern most host city, Curitiba, about the #CheerForPeace project which is working with communities in the cities most central favela Vila Torres)

The eyes of the world focus on Brazil

Today the 2014 FIFA World Cup begins in Brazil, who knows how it will go. Will it be a success, or not? Will they have the stadiums finished in time, or not? Will it be interrupted by violent protests, or not? Will it be a positive thing for the country, or not?

We already have, what has quick become, an iconic image of where much of the feelings in Brazil rest at present. Brazilian artist Paulo Ito posted this mural on the doors of a schoolhouse in São Paulo’s Pompeia a few weeks ago.

In 2012 public opposition forced the ditching of a plan for a "retirement village" on the side of the Dublin mountains, isolated from services and public transport and cut off by the M50, in an area normally zoned for agriculture and public amenity and widely used by the public. A previous plan for a private school on the site had been rejected for similar reasons in 2005. After the local elections the plan is back in a lightly tweaked form, with the developer's sister among a number of newly elected councillors supporting the project. ... read full story / add a comment
