David Norris has recently been diagnosed with cancer which he speculated appears to be related to the initial incidence of viral hepatitis which he contracted from tainted drinking water while he was on unpaid Government business in Eastern Europe in 1994. There is much discussion about this online, but this personal situation may have added fire and urgency to his impassioned breathless speech in defence of the Seanad. Here it is. Share it widely. ... read full story / add a comment
Beppo Grillo - leader of M5S movement in Italy

In the recent elections in Italy the new movement M5S led by the former Italian comedian Beppo Grillo has gained 108 seats in the lower Chamber of Deputies and 54 in the Senate. It is hard to get an accurate picture of who he is and what he wants from the mainstream media since they see him as a challenge to the system and will gladly misrepresent him. In this article it reports on the account given at The Automatic Earth blog where Nicole Foss met Beppo Grillo in Italy and gives her view on him, his movement and what they are trying to achieve.

"The internet is central to Grillo's ideas. Not only as a tool to reach out to people, but even more as a way to conduct direct democracy. Because that is what he seeks to create: a system where people can participate directly. Grillo wants to bring (back) democracy, the real thing, and he's long since understood that the internet is a brilliant tool with which to achieve that goal." ... read full story / add a comment

"A lot of people say we have no control over how this country is run" These are the opening words of the current television advertisement campaign being run to convince people to vote in Saturday's referendum, and they reflect what most of us already know about the political system which operates in Ireland. The advert however does not go on to explain how only those living in 26 of Ireland's 32 Counties will be given a vote and that a quarter of Ireland's population will be automatically excluded ... read full story / add a comment

In politics, sortition (also known as allotment or the drawing of lots) is the selection of decision makers by lottery. The decision-makers are chosen as a random sample from a larger pool of candidates.

In ancient Athenian democracy, sortition was the primary method for appointing officials, and its use was widely regarded as a principal characteristic of democracy.

Eoghan Harris tried to run the 1997 election through Derek Nally, former head of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors. He tried to destroy the Mary McAleese campaign by using Nally. That is where Harris's description of McAleese as a 'Tribal Time Bomb' came from. The bomb blew up in Harris's face when Nally found out. He ditched Harris and his political playmate, John Cadden, when he found out that he was a patsy. Nally was an unusual policeman who challenged the Garda 'Heavy Gang' in the 1970s.

The info is here:

Today, Harris wants to run the election through Gay Mitchell, see:

There is not one word on his literature about his position on abortion, civil partnership, his opposition to gay rights in general, his opposition to sex education. Not one word about religious values. No reference to his support for the Iona Institute and the right wing economic policies of its director David Quinn (overspending on public services was the problem)

His Brief CV makes no mention of his period as sec to archbishop Connell. He is only for adult stem cell research etc

FF, FG, Labour, ex-PDs, and other shades of establishement opinion are putting themselves forward as 'independents' in the upcoming election to Seanad Éireann. The mask of 'disability campaigner' or 'human rights advocate' is unfortunately the last refuge of some of them. This is most obvious on the university constituencies. Here I have outlined the party loyalties of some of them. ... read full story / add a comment

The Peoples movement calls for its supperters to vote for and to help 4 independent councillors to be elected in Dublin, Sligo, Donygal and Galway. This is vital in order to ensure that a number of politicans are elected with principled policies on the EU and leaving the Euro currency and on taking the Icelandic approach to solving our banking debt. ... read full story / add a comment

Gerry Adams made a big contribution to politics with his statement on the EU and IMF and has shown the way out of the mess that the political establishment and their EU and IMF overlords have saddled the Irish People with for the next 20 to 50 years. A new campaign is currently being launched, with the aim of giving people a real alternative to the Fine Gael/Labour coalition that is on the cards - and returning true democracy to Ireland.

Sunday 21 November, the day the Irish government formally applied for a bailout to the EU and IMF, should be marked as the day that the Irish capitalist class were exposed as a rotten, despicable failure, bankrupt in every sense and incapable of offering any way forward. The significance of these developments cannot be overstated; they are a turning point in Irish history and will impact on other countries in Europe and the EU itself. ... read full story / add a comment
