France in flames. Workers and students shut downt country on 4th day of strike against reforms
international / anti-capitalism Saturday October 16, 2010 - 11:13 by France in flames, again   text 25 comments (last - wednesday october 27, 2010 - 13:16)   image 37 images   video 18 video files
French strikes continue. Strikes spread across the country on fourth day of nationwide protests over pension reforms. Three fuel storage depots have been reopened by riot police in France, as fears grow of a shortage at the pumps. Nine of the country’s 12 refineries have shut down due to strike action prompted by the government’s plans for pension reform. High school students have joined the pension protests for the first time this week. 360 high schools across the country were closed this morning due to protests by students. In Paris, one of them is in a critical condition after being hit in the face by a “flashball” – a device used by police for crowd control.

The wall that Israel has built in Palestinian territory is more than a barrier -- it’s also a focus for popular art.

Graffiti in the form of words and images have transformed the wall into a living canvas of resistance and solidarity, created not only by Palestinians but also by international artists.

On Thursday, September 16th, Joe Gilmartin and Seamus O’Nualláin left Tipperary with a van full of aid to drive 5000 km to Gaza.
Along with others from the north and the UK, they are part of the international VIva Palestina convoy of almost 200 vehicles, $3million of medical aid, and 400 people from 30 different countries, for the people of Gaza.
Having crossed through France, Italy, Greece and Turkey, the latest news is that that the convoy is waiting in Latakia, Syria, to get a ferry to Egypt and then travel into Gaza.
The Egyptian government is currently threatening not to allow them through.

Here is the diary that Joe and Seamus have sent back. To follow their progress go to facebook page “Tipp2Gaza”.

A conference; workshops; an election of a new board representative of all the regions of Europe; and an open air concert in Aristotle Square, the principal civic square in Thessaloniki, on Thursday night at the end of the conference. The theme of the conference was the future for users and survivors. The motto of the concert was Stop Psychiatric Violence. I reversed my journey on Friday evening reaching Jenkinstown at 23.55.
