This month, a Canadian court refused to hear a habeas corpus writ to challenge the continuing detention of Basque refugee Iban Apalaoza Sancho and the state's plans to deport him to Spanish jurisdiction. The court ruled that the country's Charter of Rights and Freedoms does not apply to residents in Canada who are not citizens. Iban is now on hunger strike in protest and the 17th has been set by the Canadian authorities for his deportation. "Alarming concern has been expressed for the continuing medical condition of republican prisoner Aidan Hulme in Portlaoise Prison.
Following a visit from a doctor it was observed that Aidan's toes on his injured leg had turned black giving rise to fears of possible

Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire of the Peace People was among a party of internationals waiting in Larnaca, Cyprus recently for a sea-worthy boat to take them to Gaza with food and medicines. The venture has been postponed because near deals with boat owners fell through repeatedly and also because of high seas. However the 22 people involved including five Palestinian doctors, intend to return to Gaza and invite others to join them
