The British Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Lord Triesman, in a speech given to the Royal Commonwealth Society on the 26th of June, has stated that in facing up to the challenges posed by the 21st century, the Commonwealth must learn the lessons of the past, and he added: “In a globalised world the Commonwealth cannot go it alone.” The Minister also said that: “The people and governments of the Commonwealth must help address the big issues facing the world. The Commonwealth does have a comparative advantage in many niche areas, including Diversity, Identity, and Multiculturalism. It must exploit these at all levels.” ... read full story / add a comment

The EPA website today invites you to give them your opinion on how well they do their job. This is newsworthy as it is a rare event for a State agency to put itself into the spotlight in this way. However the call for opinions needs a little more publicity than simply appearing on the EPA website. Indymedia's newswire allows readers to learn about stuff like this from a central point - that is what makes Indymedia so valuable. ... read full story / add a comment

8 Sudanese men who came off a hungerstrike on the 9th June, after 19 days without food, face deportation from Sweden to their home country despite their protests. After almost three weeks camped out in the centre of Gothenburg their public hungerstrike culminated at the city migration board offices (Migrationsverket) with the presentation of a petition of 7,000 signatures supporting their plea for asylum. The 8 are now continuing their campaign while awaiting the verdict on their individual cases which is due later in the summer.

“I am freezing, I have a pain in my stomach and feel sick. We will all visit a doctor tomorrow morning” said Dafalla Ohmar one of the hunger strikers said afterwards. ... read full story / add a comment
