Raymond Devos the Belgian born, French resident & Francophone Cartoonist, Comedian, Political (& national) satirist has died of a brain hemorrhage today. He was a very funny man who's humour & wit crossed borders & langauges. He will be sorely missed. . Everyone who met Raymond Devos liked him. His jokes were both simple & intelligent. He'll be sincerely missed. He made many friends, most of whom will want to attend his sudden funeral. He won lots of important awards for being funny & clever but won't get a state funeral from either France of Belgium. Raymond Devos was in no common sense of the word a popular man. & sincere with it. He rose to acceptance of his extraordinary talent through circus acts & written puns of astounding complexity. In 1956 He worked with Jean Luc Godard on the movie "Pierrot le Fou". ... read full story / add a comment

Shannon airport is being heavily used today by the US military to move troops to and from the Middle East. Between 9am and 10am there were three troop carriers, World Airways, ATA, and North American at the airport with over 500 troops on board, and likely to be carrying about 500 M-16 automatic rifles, and the same number of 9mm automatic pistols, and assorted munitions. Military prisoners in shackles may also have been on board, as this is a regular practice by the US military. Also at the airport was an executive jet, that has been reported as making frequent visits to RAF bases, N750JJ. Further investigation is called for, but this is unlikely to come from the Gardai, who have ignored the vast majority of complaints, or requests for searches of US aircraft, made to them so far. Nevertheless, I made the statement of complaint and request for aircraft to be searched which is included below. ... read full story / add a comment

"Mass clearances during the Irish Famine were made possible by the landlords' use of the infamous bailiffs - The Crowbar Brigade. Their actions combined with the presence of police were likely to quell any thought of serious resistance by tenants / indigenous people who 'must be taught by the strong arm of the law that they have no power to oppose or resist'." http://www.nde.state.ne.us/SS/irish/unit_3.html Well, is that right? Limerick County Council brought in their own Cro-bar Construction Brigade accompanied by An Garda Síochána again this morning in a staged attempt to push the polluted River Deel water pipeline past the 'white line', which was held again this morning by local residents, mostly women, including Orla Kaiser's mother Joan Hayes and Tom Clarke's wife Breda Clarke. Joan and Breda showed no fear in a powerful statement to Gardaí, Limerick County Council and national media, saying they are prepared to go jail if necessary, with Orla, to defend their rights and their Spring Water. ... read full story / add a comment

Just received word that Bertie Ahern may be holding a press conference at 12.30pm today. It appears that a rumour is doing the rounds that cleaning staff at Shannon airport have seen a man in shackles aboard a US aircraft. This is sketchy information and it's unclear what, if anything, might emerge. A case of watch this space, methinks. ... read full story / add a comment
