international / worker & community struggles and protests Sunday March 19, 2006 - 15:31 by iosaf mac diarmada .:. the ipsiphi
It has been long observed that people for some reason on their non-banking days readily absorb shite about Dangerous Places, Famous People, Sensible Saving Options, Holidays, Interesting facts, Sport results, Media, gardening and health as well looking ahead at “democratic evolution” and looking back at "how history was made". in this edition, the first since the "Mozart Edition" of Jan. 8, I will touch briefly on the three years since the Iraq war, Whats happening in France on the class politics front and in Peru and Italy on the lead-up to their general elections next month, and a even shorter mention of the Zapatista's other campaign in Mexico. & a bit of religiosity too. ... read full story / add a comment

dublin / rights, freedoms and repression Saturday March 18, 2006 - 10:56 by The Strawberry Girl
A well dressed male in his fifties, dressed in a tweed sports jacket and trousers, wearing a hunting or fishing hat, which seemed outlandisly old-fashioned stalked me from the bank of ireland through the Swan Centre , except that I only became aware that he was doing this when I got to the most mundane of places, the fish counter. The place to discuss the price of fish and smile in to your eyes, to grab your hand and hit on you. Fair enough, let go my hand. I don't want to go for a coffee, in fact I have an appointment. The grip on my hand got harder and he kept eye-contact as he ground my ring into the bone of my finger. There we are standing in a crowded shop in broad daylight and he is getting his jollies by studying minutely the change in my face from friendliness, to awareness,to fear. He wants to capture that and take it home with him.I ripped my hand away and continued shopping, he followed me through three aisles. Why didn't I shout, or land him on the floor or ask for help? I still don't know the answer to the question. I reported it to the manageress , who gave a descrition to security guy, who stood watching me pack up and walked me to the door. He tells me to get a cup of tea and come back . They will pull the cctv. Thanks security guy. I returned with a friend an hour later. I haven't heard anything since. I suppose that it looked almost mundane on the footage. ... read full story / add a comment

what began as an innocent piss up on Paddy's day, with hundreds of irish and other tourists present to enjoy a weekend has (at time of writing) turned into the most serious urban disturbance in recent history. The Police have brutally repressed the revellers and have in the last hour resorted to clearing the old city with rubber bullets. Over 100 have been fired so far. serious injuries have been photographed. ... read full story / add a comment

national / anti-war / imperialism Friday March 17, 2006 - 02:28 by Fintan Lane
I thought that this story would be reported/posted by PANA or somebody more directly involved in organising the event, but it has hasn't happened, so I here is my very short version: On Wenesday, 15 March, a fly-in protest (organised by the Peace and Neutrality Alliance) occurred at Shannon airport. Those who fly in were Roger Cole (PANA), Tony Gregory TD, Senator David Norris, John Maguire (Anti-War Ireland), Finian McGrath TD, John Gormley TD, A. O Snodaigh TD, Joe Costello TD, Joe Higgins TD, Fintan Lane (Anti-War Ireland) and Tommy Broughan TD. We boarded an 11.30 flight at Dublin and flew direct to Shannon in order to avoid the usual security attempts to quash Shannon protests, We were joined by Jan O'Sullivan TD at Shannon. As protests go, it was relatively uneventful, except insofar as it actually happened. It was a clever initiative by PANA that alllowed us to successfully avoid the clampdowns that have suppressed all protests at the airport since 2003. On a personal note, it was nice to be part of an anti-war protest within Shannon airport terminal, having been banned from the entire county for a two-year period. The struggle does on. A protest was held within terminal and also outside the front door. ... read full story / add a comment

When the state, the agencies of the state and the re-zoners(pardon me, Council) are going to put a road through it. Thus 4,000 people objected to the An Bord Pleanala decision to Route the M3 through the Tara Gabhra Valley. One person goes to court to seek judicial review of that decision, (gets hammered for 600,000 grand) and the message we take from this is, do not attempt to engage with a system and structure of planning that is designed to disempower your community or your legitimate right to protest. I quote from the affidavitt: "None of the 38sites/monuments are considered to have a group value or to have any relationships with the other monuments. At the risk of sounding frivolous, does this mean that they and their occupants or creators dropped out of the sky and did not interact with any other living soul or place in this landscape?" This ,from the state is what the 600,000 grand paid for. We are looking at appeal . ... read full story / add a comment
