Switzerland is not a member of the €U, but has moved steadily closer to the €U in the last years, signing up to very important agreements on many issues including banking, secrecy, exchange of information, migration and enviromentalism. Thirteen EU member states as well as Norway and Iceland are signatories to the Schengen and Dublin treaties. Ireland and the UK are due to join later this year, while the new EU countries will participate at a later stage. Under the accords, Switzerland would agree to abandon systematic identity checks on its borders but link up to a Europe-wide electronic database on wanted and missing persons, illegal immigrants and property. ... read full story / add a comment

Meanwhile, Israel still vague about possessing nuclear weapons adds to its crimes against humanity in the Occupied Territories by dumping its waste on someone else’s homeland. ... read full story / add a comment

On Friday 3rd June 2005, Dr Jerry Cowley TD led a delegation to the office of the County Manager, Des Mahon. The delegation consisted of local people from Erris and members of Shell to Sea (Mayo and Galway). Despite receiving prior notification by a member of Shell to Sea, the county manager left the building ten minutes before the arranged meeting time. He returned thirty minutes later and was surprised to find the delegation waiting for him. Let us just say they had words!!! Dr Cowley presented the letter to the county council, despite the absence of Mr Mahon, calling on them to play a more pro-active role in the conflict between the local people of Erris and multi-national giant Shell. It also called on Mayo County Council to insist on adequate regulation of the entire project to ensure the safety of the citizens of county Mayo. This weekend, June 4-6, is the solidarity gathering in Rossport, Co. Mayo. All are welcome. ... read full story / add a comment
