The campaign is geared towards establishing an independent free phone helpline to combat race crime in Northern Ireland and to ensure qualitative and consistent ‘cultural sensitive’ support are given to victims, especially to those suffering in silence. This initiative will provide good quality information and support to victims of racist crime. It will contribute to a reduction of repeat incidents and encourage statutory agencies and local community residents to tackle perpetrators. The Helpline will provide a vital resource for victims. ... read full story / add a comment

national / rights, freedoms and repression Thursday April 28, 2005 - 14:00 by Midlander
Readers will likely have heard the very sad story this week about conjoined ('Siamese') twins being born in Dublin. The poor kiddies were too ill to be separated and died within 24 hours of birth. Naturally parents very upset and issued a statement asking for prayers for their babies and begging for privacy from the media. People will thus not be surprised to hear that the Irish Independent has at present (thursday lunchtime) several news teams prowling the outskirts of a Midlands town trying to find out more about the family. They actually have a name and address they are chasing up. So called 'journalists' from the Indo called at my cousins' house this morning only to be told the 'F8CK OFF' pretty sharpish. What goes through the heads of these people at all? How can they sleep at night persecuting a family who have suffered such tragedy? ... read full story / add a comment

Audio of talk by Dr Brian P Murphy osb in the Imperial Hotel South Mall Cork on Fri April 15 2005. Nine audio files - approx two hours in total. This very successful meeting (over 200 present) also saw the launch of Dr Murphy's new book, 'The Catholic Bulletin and Republican Ireland'.
Some recent studies question the ideals of the Irish republican movement, branding it as sectarian; minimising the ideals of those involved; and categorising the IRA as murderers of policemen. These issues were addressed in the talk, which furthers the critique of the approach adopted by Peter Hart in 'The IRA and its Enemies', and in subsequent revisionist work. The debate on the approach by Peter Hart, and his response, has been covered on Indymedia Ireland previously here.

Economic Partnership Agreements are new free trade agreements between the EU and a group of developing countries in Africa, the Carribean and the Pacific (APC). They are to be operative from the end of 2007, but the poorest countires already have supposed access to EU markets, so there is little gain for them in EPAs. Under EPAs developing countries must open up their markets even more than is required by the WTO. This involves - fully eliminating import duties and quotas on imports - progressive liberalisation of services - opening up of capital markets - liberalising the three 'new issues' refused by them at the WTO in Cancun. Shamefully, this is being negotiated under the EU's aid package - the Cotonou Agreement - which is supposed to be poverty focused. Act on line to stop these unfair agreements, which will be damaging to the world's poorest countries: http://www.comhlamh.org/campaigns/383 ... read full story / add a comment
