Justine McCarthy, front page of the Irish Indo Review section today, reports on her pretty nasty experience after being invited to the Indymedia Centre (txt & link below).
Being a professional evil corporate hack myself, who nonetheless believes deeply in both the right to protest and a free press, let me tell you - the English crowd who gave Justine a load of bother has made intimidation the message. Literally, by destroying the notes of interviews with DGN folks.
She's no Brendan O'Connor, provocatively sauntering into the IMC spoiling for a fight. She's probably the most thoughtful and professional journo working at her paper.
Bad call - and if people involved with the IMC expect anyone outside the echo chamber to take their messages seriously, they should condemn this incident for what it is. Simply thuggery. ... read full story / add a comment

Something of a confrontation between the Group Who went to Mountjoy to protest the detention of their three friends and Two camera crews took place. An IMCer was present and filled me in on what happened as follows. Footage and stills of the incident will follow.

At around 12.30 in the vicinity of Mountjoy a SKY news cameraman with a retinue of 3 gardai repeatedly attempted to film protesters who made it clear they did not want to be filmed. With Garda cover he insisted on pushing his way into the ranks of protesters agressively shoving the camera in their faces. It was made clear to him by the IMCer that he was behaving in an unprofessional and irresponsible and provocative manner. He refused to leave and his camera sustained some minor damage when it was kicked while sitting on the ground on the road. He has since been bleating on about being 'attacked' up at the indymedia centre at a press conference. We have film of his provocateur style behavior which will be published immin ... read full story / add a comment
