The bitter nine-month conflict, which has cost the Government £100 million, was resolved when 300 delegates from the Fire Brigades Union voted by 3-1 to accept the pay offer phased in over 30 months. But some delegates at a special conference in Glasgow were furious that the deal had been accepted and said that Andy Gilchrist, the union’s general secretary, (who was backed by the SP) would face a leadership challenge. That was not tied to modernisation and would have given a firefighter £30,000 immediately ... read full story / add a comment

Ok I haven't talking to any Belgium people to heard their viewpoint on having NATO headquarters in their country. I'm sure there are a number of people in Belgium that would love to see the day that NATO packed its bags and moved on. In the light of this, the Belgium people should prevent their government in changing the law to put foreigners on trial for war crimes. ... read full story / add a comment

Workers and service users of the Irish Wheelchair Association are protesting today about a 33% cut in FAS funding which will result in over half of their current staff being let go in the next 12 months. A number of people with banners were parading down O’Connell St. at lunch time, followed by a fleet of IWA coaches to protest at these cuts. I presume they were on their way to the Dail to register a formal complaint there.
