OscailtInterview with gifted political singer/songwriter Ciaran MurphyCiaran Murphy is a political singer songwriter based in Belfast who wrote the bulk of his material while a "dissident republican" prisoner between 2003 - 06. Last month an English music label pulled out of an agreed distribution deal with him due to unease at the political slant of his songs and the perceived sympathies of his small fan base. He describes himself as an 'Irish separatist' with libertarian socialist principles. Here Sean Matthews of the WSM puts questions to him on music, gigging and his political outlook. Ciaran is speaking in a personal capacity.

And that gaggle of west Belfast radical posuers wanting to use Ciarans songs without having to dirty their precious little hands actually talking to him because of his prison background and anti state political offences ...comical but tragic....little conservative bourgeouis mentalities like that are simply incapable of producing anything we could ever regard as talent or originality . Court jesters of the west Belfast micro bourgouisie , as radical as a cup of lukewarm tea .
still dont think giving his music away completely for free is the best course of action to take , because a mans gotta eat . But then again its rock and roll and anarchism too I suppose .A good way to distribute that albumhttp://www.indymedia.ie/article/86256#comment2197352008-02-14T22:57:29+00:00old punkerhttp://www.mininova.org/faq#distribution
would love to hear itwritten in adversityhttp://www.indymedia.ie/article/86256#comment2197422008-02-15T00:11:10+00:00BarryI happen to know Ciarans first day in jail was a baptism in more ways than one ....I happen to know Ciarans first day in jail was a baptism in more ways than one . He had the misfortune to be incarcerated on the very day the dirty protest broke out in Maghaberry and he went straight on it without hesitation within hours of landing in that hellhole , without even waiting to unpack his bag . Not that he had a bag to unpack . Spending your first night in jail with the walls plastered in excrement in contradicition to every civilised notion youd been reared with was a very tough call to make but he made it and stuck by it . The state was the criminal and not him and he refused to bend on that one instinctively , making that point from the word go . And while in jail he suffered great personal loss on the outside that hes probably still not recovered from .
Songs that have been written in the midst of that type of adversity have a true meaning and empathy with all those facing their own particular battles with "the man ". And what it all boils down to is its the same battle , just with different fronts .A breath of fresh airhttp://www.indymedia.ie/article/86256#comment2197582008-02-15T11:16:54+00:00paul o toolepauljotoole at eircom dot netInvigorating stuff Ciaran. Theres little so little protest songs and real, relevant music at a time when it's most needed, the silence from those you expect to come up with something is deafining, they have albums to sell using the same airwaves that probably avoid you like the plague.
You are inspirational. I havnt bought any music in years cos its all been complete shit. Discusting inane, impotent drivel. The last music ive found and loved isDave Rovics whom ive become friends with, and his stuff excited me. Now ive heard this and it gives me a reason to keep movin on and not giving up.
It's brilliant musically, poetically and politically in such a down-to-earth way. Really impressive.
