In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy
When'er we hear that glorious word!

Our fathers, chained in prisons dark,
Were still in heart and conscience free;
And truly blest would be our fate
If, we like them should die for Thee.

Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife,
And preach thee too, as love knows how,
By kindly deeds and virtuous life.
Faith of our fathers, holy Faith,
We will be true to Thee till death,
My admiration for such direct actionhttp://www.indymedia.ie/article/75453#comment1460852006-04-16T15:33:49+00:00PaulThis was an interview that I truely enjoyed, there was a great sense of humour r...This was an interview that I truely enjoyed, there was a great sense of humour running all the way through the interview, a real joie de vivre. In an ideal world this attitude a what true christianity means to me. Unlike you Robbie I am not an atheist more an unthoughful agnostic (I do not know if god exists and inreality I try not to care as I believe we all have to develop our own values systems that can be justifiable on humanistic grounds of peaceful co existence.....rather than aiming for a legalistic slavish adherence to rules laid down by thse who profess to have a direct line to salvation).

I think what what was stated in the interview shows an adherence to timeless values that is informed but not exclusively by religious beliefs. I believe within each belief system those timeless values have been so tarted up that the initial moral/ethical code contained within has been a dehumanising influence. This dehumanising trend has been highjacked by by other power structures to push an even more dehumanising agenda to ensure (see Bush the crusader) domination of one superpower (the US), too often allowed to proceed (by inaction, Ireland) or more seriously backed agressively (UK).

But this is where the cynicism comes in, regardless of my thoughts above, I believe that politics is oftentimes knowing when to stand up and be counted. In Shannons case I believe a refusal to use the airport could have many consequences to Ireland (a selfish point of view to be sure). This is not an argument about the role of the american multinations, more an argument in regards to how Ireland uses its social capital in the US and any loss of this capital would have had consequences upon the flawed northern Irish agreement.

Ireland through the FF coalition (pushed by Tom Hyland) did push UN world opinion in regards to the East Timorian situation a number of years ago, which proves to me that Irish Foreign policy is not totally suppine.

But of course if we tried to sit atop of the high moral ground I wonder would Ireland ever have any world wide influence, such as in east Timor.

If we are lucky someday we can prove that Jesus was an essene and maybe then we could develop a truely ethical world order. Or maybe that is too sectarian centric.acquittedhttp://www.indymedia.ie/article/75453#comment1606272006-07-25T17:05:51+00:00dunkfuspey at yahoo dot co dot ukNot Guilty.
