International Day of Solidarity: The Tar Sands

category international | environment | event notice author Monday June 13, 2011 15:50author by Tara Wrayauthor email tarawray at hotmail dot comauthor address Galway Report this post to the editors

The international day against the tar sands will be taking place on the 18th June

On the 18th June there will be an awareness raising action taking place on shop street in Galway in order to raise public awareness about the Tar Sands. We will be flyering bettween 10:30 to 3 or so. I will have flyers available for anyone who is willing to help out. I also have two posters done up for the day. If anyone is available to help out with flyers and talking to the public please email me.

The Tar Sands of the Alberta Forest in Canada is one of the most carbon intensive energy projects on the earth. Already in the area there hav been unprecedented levels of cancer and bowel diseases.

The unrestrained release of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, especially carbon-intensive ones, “now threatens the political stability of human civilization.” The rapid increase in the development of carbon-intensive, unconventional oil “could tip the scales towards dangerous and uncontrollable climate change.”
(Dirty Oil: How the tar sands are fueling the global climate crisis, Green Peace,

The Canadian government ignores the warnings of the scientific community by aiming for abysmal targets that will leave us at nearly double the science-based target that we need to meet to keep the increase in global temperature below 2 C and avoid catastrophic climate change.

If anyone can come and help talk to the public/hand out flyers any help would be appreciated!
