A photographic display in a Clonmel shop window gives pride of place to the cruel sport of live hare coursing in a sports promotion...
We have much to be proud of in Ireland when it comes to sport. But live hare coursing hardly deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as hurling, football, rugby or any other normal sporting activity. Sport is about competition and fair play. The hare in coursing is just a plaything for the dogs and its stark terror in dodging them is a bit of fun for the punters.
That’s why I’d object to a display in a Clonmel shop window of a big hare coursing picture as part of a collection that purports to promote “all that’s best in Irish sport”.
I’m posting a photo here of the window display. The building is in Gladstone Street, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, beside the DV8 fashion store.
