The Nation joins the campaign against Julian Assange

Those supervising the attack against Assange are no doubt congratulating themselves

“Feminist opinion—as the Assange case and the Polanski affair before it have demonstrated—has become one of the means of legitimizing the suppression of nonconformists and political dissidents, and of changing the subject from the great social issues, above all, class oppression and social inequality, to stale and self-pitying concerns.
Those supervising the attack against Assange are no doubt congratulating themselves on its clever design. Mounting it in the guise of a campaign against the sexual molestation of women… how else could such a filthy operation, with its threat of a sweeping assault on democratic rights, be mounted and even legitimized today?
The powers that be know the Pollitts of this world, and the Nation. The magazine’s editor, Katrina vanden Heuvel, is, after all, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a leading ruling class think tank whose membership has included numerous CIA directors, along with dozens of US generals and admirals.”

WSWS.org have published an article about the nation magazine's attack on Julian Assange. It suggests amongst other things that those in charge are working to maintain the status quo and that it has links with right wing think tank. Check it out for yourself.

Here's a working link to the David Walsh article.

John Pilger calls it “a superb truth-telling piece” in the wsws letters section .

Its wrong to link Assanges case with that of Polanski. Polanski was convicted of (and admitted to) drugging and raping a 13 year old girl. Assange is accused of raping 2 adults, one of whom held a party for Assange after she first slept with him (the occasion which the rape supposedly occurred).

It is also wrong to use this as an excuse for feminist bashing as many feminists have supported Assange.

Making a mockery of the real crime of rape
http://www.counterpunch.org/shamir09142010.html

This article gives some background information on the "victims" one of which, Anna Ardin turns out to be an anti castro activist. Big surprise!

Nobody talking at all about the accusers publicly. How many times has Anna Ardin and her links to anti cuba activities been mentioned?

Yet every time they mention Julian Assange, the word rape is also mentioned in the same sentence.
Thats the nature of a successful propaganda smear campaign.
He is already guilty in most people's minds at this stage.

This was a "honeypot" set up job, followed by a systematic media smear campaign to assassinate his character and make that the story instead of covering the cables themselves properly. When the cables ARE covered in the MSM they tend to dwell on selective tidbits which are in keeping with imperialist policy such as the divisive comments on Iran.

..he didn't seek refuge in Ireland. He'd be in Guantanamo by now.

No doubt they are grooming a few loose cannons for a potential hit.
Can't have that sort of example; not in the Free World.
