Anarchist organisation Workers Solidarity Movement (WSM) has called for support for the Student Protest Against Garda Brutality called by students from the Free Education for Everyone and Students in Solidarity networks. The protest is due to gather at the Wolfe Tone Statue on St. Stephen’s Green on Wednesday (10th November) at 6:00p.m. and will march to Pearse Street Garda station.

Commenting in advance of the protest, WSM spokesperson, Gregor Kerr, said “The events of last Wednesday when gardaí attacked peacefully protesting students should be of grave concern to all who value democracy. Pictures and videos from Wednesday show that the gardaí made a deliberate decision to violently remove peaceful protestors from the street.”

“People were beaten indiscriminately, horses were ridden recklessly at people sitting on the ground. Gardaí punched, kicked and dragged people and threw them on the ground. All of this was for the most part unreported in the mainstream media. However videos and pictures posted on youtube, facebook and other social networking sites have revealed the true brutality of what went on in Merrion Row and its environs on Wednesday afternoon,” Mr. Kerr continued.

“Next month’s budget will see savage attacks on public services and people’s living standards in order to protect the wealthy. A very clear message is now being delivered to the people of this state. The gardaí and their political masters want to frighten people off the streets, they do not want us to exercise our democratic right to protest.”

“Clearly this state is not just in the midst of a financial crisis, we are also very much in the centre of a crisis of democracy. The will of the people has been subjugated to the will of bankers, developers and the super-wealthy. Wednesday’s attack on peaceful protestors was designed to re-inforce that subjugation. All those concerned with democracy should take a stand and should respond clearly that we are not going to be made lie down.” Mr. Kerr concluded.
