March for Marriage 2010

category dublin | gender and sexuality | event notice author Saturday August 21, 2010 14:30author by John Report this post to the editors

Civil Partnership excludes LGBT people from a fundamental civil and human right. Civil Partnership makes us second class citizens. Civil Partnership does not provide equality for LGBT people and their families. One of the most outrageous aspects of the partnership scheme is the complete lack of any rights for LGBT parents and their children. It offers no way for parents to create protected legal bonds with each other as parents or with their children. Civil Partnership denies parents the right to make educational and medical decisions regarding their children. It denies children of LGBT parents the right to inherit from their parents. Parents will be taxed as a couple but denied their parental rights as a couple. In the tragic event of a biological parent dying a child could be taken away from its other mom or dad.

Noise believes that even if partnership offered all the benefits of marriage, it would still be discrimination as a separate system for gay people only cannot be called equality. Noise calls for an end to such an apartheid system and for the Irish government to open up the choice of civil marriage to all citizens. Follow the example of Spain, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Argentina, Portugal, Nepal, Mexico, Iceland, The Netherlands and Belgium - Civil Marriage Now!

Sunday is nearly here! We really need everyone to make a special effort to march this year come rain or shine! Don’t forget to ask your friends and family to come. We need as many there as possible to show that we won’t be pacified by half measures in the form of Civil Partnership.

We will be gathering beside City Hall at 2pm on Sunday and marching up to the Department of Justice on Stephen’s Green. Colm O’Gorman of Amnesty International and Grainne Healy of Marriage Equality will be among the speakers.

Don’t forget Tripod are hosting a post-march party til late! There’ll be a BBQ (with veggie option), Mr Greedy’s Ice Cream Van and fabulous djs:
