Direct Action Camp to support local anti-road campaign

The Irish Climate camp will take place this year in County Tyrone, from the 12th to the 16th of August. The camp is taking place in support of the local community and their opposition to the proposed new A5. Climate Camp Ireland is a group of individuals that believe in taking direct action against the local causes of climate change. The Camp is open to anyone to attend, and will host numerous workshops on many aspects of climate change.

On Saturday July 3rd, Climate Campers took part in a rally organised by the Alternative A5 Alliance in the area surrounding Victoria Bridge, Co. Tyrone to mark their opposition to the planned building of a new dual carriageway. The rally was a silent and symbolic affair with a hearse carrying a coffin with flowers and wreaths. The coffin had a banner on it that read "Kill the road , not the environment".

Climate Camp Ireland is a group of individuals that believe in taking direct action against the local causes of climate change. The coffin had a banner on it that read "Kill the road , not the environment", highlighting the damage to be caused to local wildlife and the environment. Dressed in solemn funeral attire the procession drove slowly from Aughnacloy to Stranbane with a cavalcade of supporters, stopping at each village which would be affected by the road. They gave out leaflets and information to raise awareness of how this dual carriageway will affect many of the local communities.

“ The symbolic nature of the hearse and coffin shows the severity of this unsustainable project which will directly contribute to climate change and people dying.” said Nancy Serrano, a spokesperson for Climate Camp Ireland. According to a report commissioned by the Geneva-based UN Global Humanitarian Forum in May 2009, climate change kills about 315,000 people every year through sickness, disease, weather disasters and the toll is expected to rise to half a million by 2030.

In 1989, the Southern California Association of Governments concluded that traffic-assistance measures, be they adding lanes, or even double-decking the roadways, would have no more than a cosmetic effect on Los Angeles' traffic problems. They concluded that building more highways and widening existing roads, almost always motivated by concern over traffic, does nothing to reduce traffic, and instead causes traffic to increase. Molly Walsh, from Climate Camp Ireland said "Trying to cure traffic congestion by adding more capacity is like trying to cure obesity by loosening your belt." We can't tarmac our way out of this mess."

After the rally, there was a meeting between local campaigners and Climate Camp participants with a site visit to further the plans for the Climate Camp in August. Climate Camp planning is well underway, but more help is always appreciated so get in contact and get involved!

Ridiculous that they still have the nerve to peddle this Global Warming con after all the evidence that has emerged in the last few months which completely and utterly discredit the theory. It beggars belief... who can possibly still buy in to this.

Not sure bout that, anon.I dont usually go to Esquire magazine and Rush Limbaugh for scientific data.Sure, the jury is still out, the field is complex in the extreme, and there are intruding agendas. But your link comes over more like a mischievious students gratified gloat than a reasoned contesting of species collapse and retreating snowlines. If you were not carrying such obvious corporate shills I might pay your statements a little more attention. For PR, if no other reason, lose the hysteria.

Yep.. I'm the one with dodgey sources!...

More than five months after the IPCC was accused of making assertions on the fate of the Amazon forest on the basis of a non-peer reviewed WWF report, it now appears that the original source of the IPPC's claim is a Brazilian educational website which was taken down in 2003

Furthermore, it appears that this is the only source of the IPCC's claim that made up the basis of "Amazongate" – that the IPCC was, once again, using unsubstantiated material which exaggerated the threat. This website, therefore, is the "smoking gun", the latest evidence to suggest that the IPCC is breaking its own rules.

Yes you have the dodgy sources. This is the third report to clear "climategate". scientists.

Another report has cleared scientists at the University of East Anglia’s (UEA) Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of dishonesty in the presentation of data on global warming. However it has stated that: “We do find that there has been a consistent pattern of failing to display the proper degree of openness, both on the part of CRU scientists and on the part of the UEA.” But the inquiry found that the scientists “honesty and rigour” were “not in doubt” and there was “no evidence” of behaviour that would undermine assessments by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

You are SO wise Anon.

Now tell me this:

Where is YOUR evidence to discredit the scientists?

If you have any evidence you should publish it here in Nature Magazine:

http://www.nature.com/

(The Scientists who contribute to nature Magazine might understand your vast wisdom.)

P.S.
People who cite "Climate Change" to oppose a new road are being a bit..........parochial.

They are abusing the real problem of Climate Change.

"The A5 will change the climate!" they say.

No, that road will not change the climate.

They are NIMBYS who don't like a particular road.

Man-made climate change is a hoax, the greatest falsehood of the 21st century, designed to justify higher taxatation and even more curtailment of our civil rights. This will lead to much bigger and even more intrusive government.
There are many reasons why local communities should oppose these government-driven motorway-construction schemes. But climate change isn't one of them. Reviving this hoax is counterproductive to the cause and will only strengthen the position of the government.

"There are many reasons why local communities should oppose these government-driven motorway-construction schemes."

We Romans defeated the pesky Gauls and Celts and Germanics by biilding dead straight highways.

Still admired.

The " Information Superhighway" is not new.
