Denouncing the recent politically motivated arrest of RNU Ard Comhairle member, Tony Catney, REPUBLICAN NETWORK for UNITY (RNU) SPOKESPERSON, MARTIN Óg MEEHAN said;
“For the past few years, Tony and his family have been forced to endure constant harassment, unjustified arrests and political smears by the media, politicians and RUC/PSNI. This latest political arrest marks a deliberate escalation of the campaign to criminalise our comrade and undermine RNU.
It is shameful but not surprising, that RUC/PSNI personnel were able to leak reports of impending raids to a number of Belfast journalists. Including discredited Sunday World reporters who consequently identified the home of a senior citizen in its tabloid paper, the following weekend.
The silence from political and community leaders to the above civil rights violations. Clearly demonstrate their approval of British policing and disgraceful smears. Despite this, the Republican Network for Unity will continue to challenge the current charade at Stormont and pursue our core objectives”.
