A training for anyone working in the community sector who is interested in promoting awareness and action around global issues
Linking the Local and the Global:
A Free 2-Day Residential Training Course
for the Community Sector
Portarlington, 28 & 29 April 2010 Why should you do this training?
Communities in Crisis = World in Crisis:
We live in an unequal and interdependent world. Every day we hear about crisis, from poverty to fuel prices and from racial violence to recession. And of course, we deal with many of these problems on a daily basis at a community level.
Our Issues= Global Issues:
Sometimes our problems are also global issues, and the root causes of local issues are often located outside Ireland. Conversely, what we do in Ireland affects the lives of others around the world. A better awareness of how the world works can truly empower local people and help them to become active global citizens.
Quickly Expand your Community Work Horizons:
This work, known as 'development education', can complement and enhance your community development or community education work, and this free 2-day training will give you the tools to get started on this exciting journey!

The Organisers:
Who are we?
Lourdes Youth and Community Services (LYCS), a community development project in Dublin’s North East inner city, has a 25 year history of carrying out development education within the organisation and with the local community. This workshop is being funded by Irish Aid.
LYCS & Development education
Having found development education hugely beneficial in contributing to community development, LYCS now also works to empower other community organisations to bring a global perspective to their work. LYCS does this by providing training and mentoring services and has also published Connecting Communities, a practical guide to using development education in community settings.
The Facilitators
The workshop will be facilitated by Rachel Dempsey and Helena McNeil, development education workers in LYCS. There will also be three guest facilitators inputting on the training course.
