On BBC Politics Chris Packham claimed "something called science" is evidence that the recent Dubai flooding was caused by climate change. But there's nothing scientific about the models that 'prove' that, says Paul Sutton.

The Church of England announced £100m in reparations for profiting from the slave trade. But now a historian has shown this is a mistake: the church never profited from slavery. Will the woke ever get their history right?

Cabhair Christmas Canal Commemoration Continues

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Friday December 25, 2009 19:38author by Paula Geraghtyauthor email mspgeraghty at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

Many gathered for the annual Cabhair canal swim at the Inchicore third lock.

Debris resting on the frozen canal didn't deter some of the more hardened swimmers on Christmas day. Hot whiskeys were in constant supply as men got out of the water as quick as they got in for the annual event to raise funds for republican prisoners in Portlaoise prison.

Here are some images for the image hungry out there in indymedia land!

Instead of 4 packets of Walkers!!!!! Surely there'd be some tayto lying around in a silo or somewhere?

Hi Crisp Man !
We actually had three brands of crisps available at the Swim site (all donated by local shops) , including Tayto but, despite what Gary Winston Lineker OBE may have you believe , one of those brands did not prove popular. Whilst you're trying to figure out what brand that is , I'll just have a word with the adults that are reading this.

Hi Adults!
We had a hectic four-hour marathon on the banks of the Grand Canal in Inchicore , Dublin, yesterday (Friday 25th December 2009) with about 200 people to look after!
CABHAIR had ten swimmers at the event , Santa was ambushed and robbed by the Special Branch and blood was spilt (well , dripped , actually!) and we had a raffle for the swimmers (did YOU win one?) .
A report on the proceedings can be read here - http://1169andcounting.blogspot.com/ (post dated Saturday 26th December 2009) , pics from the Swim site can be viewed at the 'Related Link' below and , thanks to Paula , on this 'Indymedia' thread - http://www.indymedia.ie/article/95195?language=en&comme...63769
- and Oxana has some pics posted, too - just type oxan@ flickr into a search engine and click on the first link.

It was a very busy , noisy and successful event , for which the organisers , the crowd of about 200 people and the ten swimmers are to be congratulated - well done to ye all !
Thanks!
Sharon.

while id like to congratulate all those who took part in this event and affirm support for all republican prisoners Id suggest publishing a picture of someones bare arse was somewhat ill advised and lowers the tone .

Hi Kevin !
Thank you for your message of support for the aims and objectives of the Swim , but regarding the photograph in question , I don't agree with you that it lowers the tone .
It helps to highlight the length that some of the Cabhair swimmers are prepared to take to do their bit on that morning - the frost and freezing fog are clearly visible , yet that man was quite determined that he was going to 'earn' his sponsorship money regardless of those , and any other, obstacles.
The nature of that particular event practically guarantees that 'flesh will be flashed' , but it's not done maliciously or on purpose.
Thanks!
Sharon.

...ever heard of Weils Disease? Very prevalent in canals and rivers, spread by rats and very deadly.

Hi Tim !
Thanks for the good wishes - much appreciated . And we remember our Fenians everywhere !

Hi Ken !
Yes , the organisers are aware of that disease and how it infects , and do their best to stop it materialising . In the 33 years that this event has been held , we have not had one infection but our defences are never down when it comes to that issue.
Thanks!
Sharon.
