Statement by the Vice President of Republican Sinn Féin Des Dalton

The OECD report on the 26 Counties signals that the point of attack for the political and financial elite will be public services and the most vulnerable in society. The report is a clear signal that workers, the unemployed, the sick, the elderly and the young will be those expected to bear the cost of propping up a corrupt and failed banking and economic system.

Working people are under attack and must act accordingly. Solidarity and mobilisation is required to drive the message home that people are not willing to accept such a barbaric attack on wages, pensions and benefits. Those who benefited least from the so-called ‘Celtic Tiger’ are those expected now to suffer the most. The orthodoxy of the political establishment is that services - which are the bench-mark of a civilised society - will be sacrificed in order to protect the bankers, the builders and the bosses.

Attacks on education, health, social services for the elderly, the disabled and the marginalised etc will leave a scar not only on this but on future generations.

Revolutionary change will not simply happen, we must make it happen. Republican Sinn Féin is calling on people to come out and support the ICTU day of action on November 6
