Willie O'Dea admits lying to High Court

Interesting article on the front page of todays Sunday Mail titled "Defence Minister admits swearing untrue Affidavit against political rival"..."O'Dea Mislead High Court"

According to the article "Defence Minister Willie O'Dea mislead the High Court by denying that he was behind a political smear campaign"

The article continues "Mr O'Dea, a trained barrister, last night sensationally admitted that the evidence he gave in a sworn affidavit was untrue. He has been forced to admit to the court that his sworn statement was wrong and he DID make serious unfounded allegations against a political rival in Limerick"

According to the article "His story changed after tape of what he'd said emerged"

Makes you wonder he much truth he is telling about Irish neutrality.

The above newspaper has it seems chosen to replicate a meme which this site has repeated for many years. The image of then minister of defence, Willy O Dea showing off new 9mm handguns to assembled journalists and in the process breaking the rule of never pointing a gun at someone you do not intend to shoot, not even if you're just trying to threaten them for ripping you off in a drug deal or attempting to look tough or just coz you don't like journalists in general .

you point a gun you fire it. .

The image has of course been repeated countless times on this site. It is perhaps our favourite image. For those who demean our contribution as writers and sustainers of indymedia ireland to the media of Irish society and the consciousness of Ireland's politics, the very fact that what ought have been a now long forgotten glitch in a ministerial photocall has now appeared in commercial newspaper.
Minister For Defense To Clean 'Radicals' Off The Streets?

We should be very proud of our consistent promotion of this image and how it fitted and fits yet, Minister 9mm Willy O'Dea.

It's a little willy who we have all come to recognise.

& this is where it was promoted in Irish subculture first in an IMC ireland feature of 2005 :
http://www.indymedia.ie/article/73038

how it was repeated one year later when I quibbled with his attendance features as minister for arms glorification for the 1916, 90th commemoration, which lest I bore anyone was officially reported as having been attended by an impossible amount of Irish people. For they could no more have fitted in the street space of the route than a million faithful could have squeezed into the section of the Phoenix park where pope JP2 said mass. But if you go down that avenue of historical correction and factual analysis you end up with a O'Connell monster meetings where only a few dozen people turned up and everyone in the field heard exactly what the man had to say about emancipation, homerule, the union without craning their necks or the great liberator needing to raise his voice.
c/f "2006 - 1916 How many went?" http://www.indymedia.ie/article/75507

Since that auspicious start in 2005/2006 we have as a bunch repeated the image of 9mm Willy with us his sights as often as is humanely possible.

An Indymedia Ireland favourite photo & one of our most succesful horizontal media memes : the little government willy.

Was O'Dea's evidence given under oath? If it was, can we expect proceedings against him? These are the questions we should be asking.
