An evening with Spanish veteran ROMA MARQUEZ SANTO

Spanish Civil War veteran of the POUM and anarchist militias, speaks in Dublin

The people of the city are invited to a public conversation with Roma Marquez Santo, a veteran of the anarchist and POUM militias in Catalonia.

Roma was initially attached to the POUM but was friendly with Durutti and attended his funeral. When his unit was broken up by the Communists within the Republican government, he managed to get away and ended up in the anarchist militias which themselves were later subsumed into the Republican army.

He spent several years incarcerated by Franco's government after the war.

Anyone who has met Roma has found him to be interesting and relevant, with vivid memories of his participation in the historic events in Barcelona when the generals revolted against the government, the fighting on the Aragon front and elsewhere. He also has strong views on the current economic crisis, and has lost none of his faith in the revolutionary events of his youth'.

Roma's visit has been facilitated by a number of political groups in the city and coordinated by the Amigos irlandeses de la revolución española.

The meeting takes place in Room 4 in the Teachers' Club on Parnell Square on Thursday, 16 July from 8pm.

The organising group for this event comprises members of the Communist Party of Ireland, Sinn Féin, the Socialist Party, the Workers Solidarity Movement and others not aligned to a political grouping.

We were glad to hear of the coming to Dublin of a survivor of the forces who fought against Franco and have publicised the meeting and will continue to do so.

But it is a pity that the DIBSC were not invited to participate on the organising committee. Our committee works for solidarity with the Basque people who certainly contributed hugely to the struggle against Franco and who probably suffered the most for their role in the Civil War. It is also one of the most active solidarity committees in Dublin and has also participated in public activities of Shell to Sea and in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

With regard to the Spanish Revolution, the Basque pro-independence Left recently formed part of a coalition across the Spanish state, Internationalist Initiative -- for the Solidarity of the Peoples, to contest the European elections, in which a massive electoral fraud was carried out by the Spanish Government, but in which even so the Basque Left movement had a recorded 14% share.

All of the organisations mentioned as being part of Amigos Irlandeses de la Revolución Espanola are well aware of our active existence for a number of years now. International solidarity, comrades, works best without exclusion of comrades who can make a contribution and who are willing to do so.

There's an interesting discussion (as always) over on the Cedar Lounge Revolution regarding Roma's visit to Ireland and the make-up of the group bringing him over.
