Fascist police used gas bombs and water canon
Fascist Turkish police used water canon and gas bombs to stop workers from accessing the central district of Taksim, Istanbul. Taksim has been the center and symbol of workers' strugle since "unknown snipers" opened indiscriminate fire on protesting workers and killed 34 in 1977.
Workers buses, which were on their way to the celebrations from the nearby city of Izmit, were stopped and workers were attacked by the police when they diverted their protest and remained in the city.
There are problems making phone contact with Istanbul at the moment but updates will be posted as comments as we receive them
