Criminals or activists?

category national | crime and justice | other press author Tuesday April 28, 2009 13:53author by Eoin Trotskylite

Full details are yet to emerge but 10 BMWs were torched in Meath yesterday (April 27). Was this a crime gone wrong, as implied by corporate media, or a provocative action targeted at the bloated fat cat remnants of an regime in decline?

While corporate media are keen to present politically motivated demonstrations as crime, activists at Glengad, tara and Shannon airport understand that legitmate protest can often be misrepresented.

Were the 10 Beamers in Clonard torched simply because a truck got stuck in the mud, as reported by Irish Times and RTEarn-a-lot - or were they symbolically incinerated?

While corporate and other media are reluctant to entertain the notion of social unrest arising from the economic depression, what more fitting sign of the times can there be than 10 unnecessary gas guzzlers set alight at an abandoned building project on the peripherary of the commuter belt.

No statements have yet to be released on this bar the Garda line trotted out and accepted by corporate and independent media outlets alike. But whether the intention was anti-consumerist, anti-gas guzzler or not, the torching of the 10 Beamers remains a potent symbol of the pipe dreams of corporate Ireland gone up in smoke.
