Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7I write for Town& Village a monthly free local newspaper. The paper is delivered to houses in the following areas - Terenure/Rathgar/Rathmines/Ranelagh/Donnybrook/Portobello/Ballsbridge.
I would like to hear from anyone living in the areas we cover who is affected by the bus cuts. I hope to write about this in our April issue.
It seems that the new drivers may not now be made redundant but that the bus cuts will go ahead which seems to me will increase Dublin buses' losses.
I see that the 18 bus will have a more restricted service. This is a most useful bus which goes across our area rather than into town, but there never seemed to be one when I wanted to use it. More 18s not less would bring back the customers.
I can be contacted at 087 2319056 or enidodowd@gmail.com
More information on cutbacks can be found in the Independent newspaper report linked to below.
A summary of these are:
Regular Routes Affected:
Bus Routes 1, 2, 3, 19, 13, 13A, 7, 11A, 45, 121, 122 to be cut by 10pc
And other services being slashed are four number 19s, three buses from the 13 and 13A routes, four from the 14A and 48A routes, six 45s, three from the 121 and 122 routes, two 210s, and two 103s.
Withdrawal of dozens of other peak-time 'Euro' buses cutbacks affecting: 51, 51D, 49, 15, 65 and 77
These are known as Euro buses because of EU funding for them.
NiteLink
Service Monday to Thursday cancelled
Service Friday and Saturday -last bus now at 3am instead of 4:30 am
Jobs and Losses
290 jobs axed
160 temporary jobs axed
120 vehicles are being taken from the scheduled fleet of only 1,182 buses
Losses of 10million -compare this with the several 1000 million handed over to the banks!!
31million in cutbacks 'urgently required'
Overall up to 1,000 scheduled journeys are being cancelled.
Its a discrace wit the proposed removal of dublin bus route 111 as i am a user of this route and it is such an esential route to me the Drivers are so nice and great fun and so helpful to the public and also to the disabled as well.
since i have used the 111 route from loughlinstown to Dunlaoghaire ...i can say at peak times its the most bizzy route i have used. so i cant understand how ....THE MANAGEMENT of dublin bus have decidede to withdraw its service.
consider running the route from Dunlaoghaire to Loughlinstown Hospital or evan up to Carrickmines ......Saves a route and decent Drivers ......so WAKE up Dublin Bus use ur cop on thats if you have any ....and please stop jumping on the RESESSION band wagon like everyone else
This should give some idea of the scale of the proposed cuts in Dublin Bus. This is a list of the journeys being lost on the routes 40/a/b/c/d. The same scale of cuts are also proposed on routes 13 also operating from Harristown garage

Driver - part of the problem with Dublin Bus is the stubbornness of the drivers and their unions in refusing to open the centre doors and allow the buses to be used in the manner in which they are designed. Instead there are totally unnecessary delays with entrance and egress. People might be more inclined to use the buses if they was a bit more consideration. The reason the drivers wont open the doors is given as health and safety though in reality it was originally a try on for compo on spurious grounds. Some drivers do open the doors at some stops but because nobody can predict when or where the value of this is diminished. Look to yourselves to improve the services and don't always be blaming the government or the Green Party for your woes.
Sceptic,
Nice to see that while the worlds economic order is in chaos you are concerned with the big issue of the day.. just like Ciaran Cuff who also sprouted similar guff to provide himself with a smokescreen for his and his partys abject failure to defend public transport.
Re centre doors; it must be a while since you travelled by bus, as any bus entering the fleet over the last 5 years or so has no centre door ; thus making it difficult for even the most enthusiastic driver to open them. This by the way was not our choice.
Health and safety grounds are never spurious, and if you had ever to represent a driver who had caught a passenger in the centre doors while leaving the stop you might think twice before repeating some lazy lie from management or media.
On older buses the centre doors stepwell was completely invisible to the driver. In other Euopean countries this door was much nearer the front door and has a good morror system to allow drivers to see the entire area. After a series of accidents ,(early to mid 90s) including a near fatal one, drivers took a collective decidsion not to use them on certain bus types.
Anyway, you need not worry too much, as if Govt policy continues, you wont be getting off any door on any bus any time soon
Cant afford a car loan? Credit crunch means you cant get a moped on tick? Bus routes been cancelled?
On your bike! A cheap, green, healthy alternative to petrol-driven forms of transport. Never been a better time to start. Get those cranks turning, you wont even remember the recession after a two hour spin.
