Just 1 Hour Can Make a Difference!

Year after year, ARAN and caring people around the world have urged the Canadian government to end the annual seal hunt. Last year, more than 205,000 seals were killed in the annual seal slaughter and in a few short weeks this devastating slaughter of seals for their skins will begin. As the world turns its attention to Canada which will host the 2010 Winter Olympics, we have an excellent opportunity to shine the spotlight on the barbaric seal slaughter.

In Canada, it is legal to slaughter seal pups when they are about 12 days old. This means that the pups are so young that they still have not eaten solid food or learned to swim. These baby seals cannot protect themselves and have no way to escape having their
skulls smashed in or being shot. Then they are skinned for their fur. The seals, which are often still conscious, are dragged across the ice floes with hakapiks, and many are skinned alive on the ice.

In April EU Ministers will vote on a possible ban on seal 'products' from Canada. If we do not get an EU-wide trade ban thus decreasing the demand for seal skins, Canada's seal slaughter will continue. Please do whatever you can to ensure you stand with ARAN on Tuesday, March 10th for a peaceful protest to urge all Irish MEP's to support a total ban on seal 'products' into Europe. ARAN will be supplying bright, eye-catching banners and placards bringing attention to Canada's seal hunt and will unveil a parody of the Olympic logo targeting the seal slaughter.
