“IT’S A GAS DAY”
The Resources of Ireland belong to the People of Ireland.
Teach-In / Entertainment
Saturday 7th March, 3pm till late, Galway Rowing Club,
behind the Court House on the banks of the Corrib.

8 pm. Frank Connolly will lead a debate: “Now is the time for the people of Ireland to take ownership and control of the natural resources (oil, gas, etc.) from the multi-nationals.”

Frank Connolly is well-known as the investigative journalist whose work has contributed to the establishment of two tribunals of inquiry – the Flood/Mahon Tribunal into planning corruption in Dublin and the Morris Tribunal into police corruption in Donegal.

Other highlights of the day:

4.30 pm. A celebration in honour of International Women’s Day:
featuring women in the struggle against the oil companies.
Erris women will talk about their experience under Shell siege.
Diana Traynor on Erris Archeology (hopefully).
Videos. Venezuela ('The Bolivarian Revolution: Enter the Oil Workers').
USA . 'Salt of the Earth.' Drama about women’s role in a strike: blacklisted in the 50s, produced by the mineworkers’ trade union, “One of the really great movies, and of course it was killed, I think it was almost never shown.” -- Noam Chomsky)

Other Videos throughout the day will include --
· 'Don’t Let Shell Kill Again,' a documentary about the Ogoni people’s struggle against Shell and the arrest and execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others..
· A sitcom episode from Nigerian TV written and performed by Ken Saro-Wiwa’s theatre company.
· Angus Mitchell’s talk (given at the People’s Forum in Belmullet, 19th Jan., on Roger Casement’s connection with the Niger Delta and its early exploitation by the oil companies.

3.30 pm. , Children & Adults.
Piss-take Verse-Song-Rap-and-Cartoon Workshop

· Norway & its resources.
· Latin America: the countries that have renegotiated the oil contracts.
· Russian gas and Ukraine.
· Gaza’s offshore gas: the role of Tony Blair and the British Gas company.

Game of Snakes and Ladders
adapted to the format of a pub quiz. Prizes.

Refreshments will be basic, tea, coffee, soup – so bring additional food for a Pot-luck feast.
The whole event will (we hope) be a relaxed family funday with singers & music etc
The Chief Pat O’Donnell has been invited to open the show.
