CORNWALL & BRITTANY - DEVOLUTION CALL

The extension of devolution to both Cornwall and Brittany was vigorously
debated at the AGM of the Celtic League held this weekend on the Isle
of Man.

Cornish and Breton delegates said the advantages of devolution as
experienced by both the Scottish and Welsh people should be extended
to their countrymen.

The Celtic League Convenor (Chairman), Cathal O Luain, said the Cornish
people had clearly demonstrated their wishes by their mass support
for a petition to the British government calling for an Assembly.

The experience of devolution in other Celtic countries is clearly
the most positive model for Cornwall in the medium term and attempts
by the Westminster government to subsume the country in a "South-West
Region" are unreasonable.

With regard to Brittany the French government are if anything adopting
an even more entrenched attitude than their British counterparts and
following debate delegates endorsed the following resolution to be
actioned by the Cornish and Breton branches and the Secretary General:

"This AGM of the Celtic League reiterates its call upon the British
and French governments to set up devolved governments for both Cornwall
and Brittany respectively, based on the model of devolved government
in Scotland."
