Shannon Watch Vigil

category clare | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Saturday January 31, 2009 16:36author by John Lannon

Peaceful protest against the airport's complicity in war and torture

The monthly vigil at Shannon Airport will take place on Sunday, February 8th from 2 - 3pm. Meet at the small roundabout before the airport entrance.

US President Barak Obama has ordered an end to his country’s torture practices and prisons. He has promised to withdraw all combat troops from Iraq, but it looks like there may be new troop deployments in Afghanistan with forces arriving in the spring and summer.

Meanwhile our Irish government sits on the fence, still open for business in support of any US war. The troop carriers continue to land and take off from Shannon, and the suspicious planes come and go. These planes may be shuffling prisoners between torture camps, enabling heartless “interrogators” to run down the clock by inflicting more brutal pain and suffering. Or they may be honouring the commitments of the previous US regime to provide deadly munitions to the Israelis for the next three years.

Despite the suffering of the people of Gaza – which Shannon airport probably facilitated - the Irish government continues to support immoral wars that serve US interests. Help us end that support by coming to Shannon on Sunday 8th February for 1 hour.

The vigil is non party political, and everyone is welcome to join in.
