Imbolc at Tara

Tara Imbolc Celebration for all. Assemble in the Tara Car Park 4.30pm Sunday 1st Feb

Invitation To Tara.

Imbolc, at the beginning of February was one of the festivals of our old Pagan calendar later adapted to become St Brigid's Day. This ancient festival was celebrated as a festival of hope, when the sheep and goat herds started to produce milk for their coming young. It was thus a festival of life, lactation and hope and it was celebrated at Tara as far back as history goes, as it was all across our once green land.

This year you are invited to Tara to walk around the hill, dieseil- sunwards, with flames or candles at dusk. This will be done in a celebration of this old festival and it may help keep the destruction of the Tara complex in national view, something now sadly being forgotten.

Also with such darkness and pain approaching us in the form of a deep, man made and in many cases fatal recession perhaps the walk might convince any watchers to finally throw off their indifference and join us, because when our politicians stabbed into the heart of the ancient fields of Tara we lost not just our luck but now it seems our way.

Such a walk around the hill might also bring attention and clarity to what that cabal of politicians, speculators and bankers have done to us, our land and our future. While we pleaded for restraint and sustainability, they rejected it as nonsense. The results are now there to see, everywhere.

So come to Tara on Sunday 1st of February, assemble at four thirty in the car park. Bring lanterns or torches. Thank you.

Tara Campaigners.

Copy this leaflet, post it on, spread it around if you can.

"That Imbolc was an important time to the ancient inhabitants of Ireland can be seen at a number of Megalithic and Neolithic sites, such as at the Loughcrew burial mounds and the Mound of the Hostages in Tara, Ireland. Here, the inner chamber of the passage tombs are perfectly aligned with the rising sun of both Imbolc and Samhain. Similar to the phenomena seen at Newgrange, the rising Imbolc sun shines down the long passageway and illuminates the inner chamber of the tomb." (From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imbolc )

The high jinks of the Save Tara protesters desperate to make a news splash, are willing to ignore the historical and astronomical facts that Tara is a Samhain site!

It very definitely is not an Imbolc site and to hold a ceremony or ritual on Tara at this date is committing a sacrilege, almost equal to that of the NRA is in destroying sacred sites.

No Druid worthy of the title would commit his or her energies to such ignorance.

Hi all,
Just a quick run down - we were all in court today, the 9 arrested on
18th July and others. It was just for mention, but the barrister made it
clear that the Judicial Review taken late in 2008 was successful and
that the documents requested have been handed over. There is the
question of video footage and the original video footage.
The next date, for mention again, is 22nd April but the solicitor
managed to persuade the judge that we need not attend. The date for the
court case itself will be decided then. The present judge will not be
hearing it, it could last from 2 days to a week! There will be, to date,
about 30 witnesses between the two sides. Video footage will be shown in
court apparently. By the time that date comes the case will be running
for nearly 2 years.
The journey to Navan was much more difficult that even I had imagined,
much more difficult than being in court. I did not visit either
Baronstown or Collierstown.

"However I do not share any confidence in the legal system or those who are employed in it."

That is really the point I was attempting to make above -- in a roundabout way -- and it is entirely (in my view) the MAIN reason why all the avoidable destruction of so many extremely important heritage sites close to the Hill of Tara have now been unnecessarily bulldozed into oblivion to make way for the M3.

In reality, and although the well-meaning and often extremely courageous protesters could DELAY the almost unbelievable destruction which has taken place in recent years (as related at locations such as http://www.indymedia.ie/article/83306 for example), it was only the lawyers who could actually STOP it: and they failed to do so -- even thought the legislation being used for the M3 construction was obviously unconstitutional, and consequently unlawful.

Exactly the same situation holds true TODAY (as I see things at least).

Shame on the legal profession I say; they have brought themselves and their profession into extreme disrepute regarding this particular issue, which I suspect will be remembered for a very long time by the people of Ireland (here and elsewhere): particularly if they keep on supporting all the corruption involved.

Prior to todays main event , a small number of Activists and Campaigners assembled at Lismullin, to mark with Ceremony, the turning of the seasons and the arrival of Imbolc. This ancient celebration marks the coming of life anew , now returning with the passing of Brigid over the Land. With prior permission from the nearby Farm Owner to cut accross his fields, we made our way to the area outside of the road take where the proposed Garden of Remembrance is hoped to be. Here we laid our own mini Henge made of Bay brances, a symbol of protection, and , hand in hand we voiced our aspirations and thanks for the coming year.

From there we made our way to the coffe shop to try to regain some body heat before embarking on the advertised Walk sunwise around the Hill. It certainly dosnt feel much like Spring right now and the imminent snowfall could be felt right through, but from the earth , young shoots are already starting to push through the frozen ground, a reminder of new beginnings and the resurgence of life.

Then we proceeded to the Main Event, the walk led by John Farrelly the organiser , and Sean Gilmartin Historian, who gave a humouress talk on the historical, spiritual and cultural importance of the various monuments along the way. We finished at The Fairy Tree, again standing in circle but this time not in Ceremony but in an all inclusive coming together of people with the same hopes and intentions. We again stood hand in hand with many welcome new comers. In all , we only had about 10 people but that was more than we had hoped for on such a bitterly cold day. By this time we were frozen to the bone but still had time for some tunes accompanied by John Farrelly and Terry Tuite on tin whistle and the experience was an uplifting one, despite the cold! To me, the time at the tree, standing with friends and with those who have come to join in for the first time was the best part of the day and we really welcomed their presence. No politics, no religion, just a coming together and it was special.

Still people come even now, and it was Wonderful to see. We left offerings of bread, milk and a Crios Bhríde at the Tree as in ancient custom before leaving via Rath Gráinne, the Sloping Trenches and the Banqueting Hall.

Many thanks to all who were present today, you make the difference, and to those who could not make it for whatever reason , we know you were there in heart and spirit and despite the fact that we couldnt feel our legs we really enjoyed the day.

It only takes a few to begin again, young shoots welcoming the return of the life giving sun.

Your ignorance of the Law and the campaign to save the Hill of Tara/environs is astounding.

The Barristers/Solicitors/Judges merely interpret the Law. Our Politicians make the Laws.

Therefore the only way to stop the destruction of Tara is through changing the minds of our Politicians.
Winning in the Courts can easly be overturned by politicians amending the Law as necessary - ask Tarawatch.

The Labour Party have consistently opposed this route - unequivocally. I challenge you to produce one statement from the Labour Party in support of the M3.

The Grenn Party promised to and subsequently renegaded - but then they also renegaded on every voter who voted for them in the last election for what ever reason/cause they voted for them. If the Greens had stood by their principles then very likely this road would not have happened. Remember this the next time you vote.

TaraWatch sent pre-Election questionnaires to all political parties in October 2008, asking them if they would promise to re-route the M3
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2008/1029/1....html

The Labour Response was to avoid the questions, despite the fact that Gilmore was at that time calling for a General Election. See below. They may have opposed the M3 in 2004 but that was long ago, back when the Greens did too. The difference was Labour gave it in writing in their manifesto, but then they didn't have an opportunity to break their promise as they didn't get into Government. Labour did get a lot of mileage out of abusing the Greens over it, but that sport got old after a few weeks, and since then we have heard nothing, bar the odd smart quip. They have dropped the ball. Where is Neath-man Dominic Hannigan? Eamon Gilmore? Sinn Fein were the only party to give a firm commitment in writing, last October. I challenge anyone to get Labour to give you a written commitment on it now. Let's see it in writing.

Martin Ferris, TD, for Sinn Fein replied to the pre-Election questionnaire:

1. Do you agree that the M3 motorway being built through the Hill of Tara archaeological complex is damaging a site of national and
international importance?

Y

2. Do you agree that the M3 Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract is a bad deal for Irish taxpayers, as it will see the lions share of
revenue go to a multi-national company, for the next 45 years?

Y

3. Do you agree it is necessary to build four motorways going through County Meath, from the M50?

N

4. Do you agree that the approximately 16 billion euros over spend by the National Roads Authority on the roads programme in the National Development Plan (NDP), between 2000-2008, is the biggest waste of taxpayers money in the history of the State, that must be
investigated?

Y

5. Do you agree with the European Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the NDP should be subjected to Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), before any more money is spent on it. If so, will you commission an SEA of the NDP, before allowing any projects that are likely to have a significant effect on the environment, to proceed further?

6. Do you agree that a new cost-benefit analysis of Transport 21, and every single project within it, should take place before any further
money is allocated?

7. Do you agree that reducing climate change gasses, due to transport, is a moral and economic imperative that must be addressed immediately?

8. Do you agree that alternatives to the current transport plan for Meath and Dublin need to be re-examined, in order to design more
efficient alternatives?

Y

9. Do you agree that the M3 should be re-routed, or cancelled, before Tara is made a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Y

10. If you enter Government will you ratify the UN Convention Against Corruption, which Michael McDowell promised, but failed to do.

Y

11. If you enter Government, after the next Election, will you seek to have the M3 altered, in order to protect the Hill of Tara?

Y

The Following Answer was given by Joanna Tuffy, Labour TD:

Further to your mail, I attach below our policy on Tara and the M3 contained in our Manifesto for the 2007 General Election. I also attach a copy of the Motion that was tabled on the issue by Labour in November 2004 for your information. Our position remains the same as that outlined. As regards your questions we are not in a position at this stage to give particular commitments as to what
will be contained in our Manifesto for the next General Election, especially as we have no idea as to when an election will take place, and the possibility that the current Government may remain in place until 2012.

Please feel free to keep in touch with me about this issue.

Regards,

Joanna Tuffy

Extract from Labour General Election 2007 Manifesto:

The Labour Party is opposed to the building of a motorway through the
Tara-Skryne Valley. We accept that the M3 is necessary to relieve commuter
congestion and that it should be built in three sections. However, the section
through the Tara Skrynne Valley should be re-routed to avoid the destruction of
our Celtic heritage.

We are particularly concerned at the possibility of major development being
attracted to the area around the motorway, which would contribute further damage
to Tara and its environs. Labour in government will work to prevent such
development taking place.

NOTICE OF MOTION

That Dail Eireann considering:
· the necessity to improve transport links along the Cavan-Dublin corridor;
· the importance of the Hill of Tara National Monument and its environs;
· the inevitable road construction delays which will result and the inevitable
destruction of heritage if the National Roads Authority persists with its
current plan to build the M3 through the Tara/Skryne area; and
· that the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government is
currently considering his options under the National Monuments Act;

calls on the government to
a) address the current transport problems on this corridor by proceeding
immediately with the Dunshaughlin, Kells and Navan by-passes, by other road
improvements and the provision of a Navan-Dublin rail link;
b) direct the NRA to immediately re-consider other options for the proposed M3:
and
c) discontinue their plans to route the M3 through the Tara/Skryne Valley.

Correction: Our politicians make the bills.

And, bills can only become law if President Mary McAleese (who is a lawyer) signs them.

Our President has an extremely important duty NOT to sign ANY bills which are unconstitutional: as is the case with the bogus, corrupt and illegal "law" used to destroy the heritage site shown at http://www.indymedia.ie/article/83306 (for example).

The Henge is no good to us with all that earth on it.
The National Monuments Service can't even mark its location until there's some kind of level.
as I recall, that earth was imported from outside for landscaping.
Keep the focus and the faith and no tears 'til the fat lady sings.
Thanks Pixies.
Keep talking

Where people could spend time to remember their ancestors, recent or ancient, a place of peace in a world gone mad.

If sheep were grazed in green fields beyond Garden of Remembrance..........
If Henge field (currently a national monument) were venerated as such......
The farm access road would be unnecessary.
Keep talking.
