Stop the Slaughter in Gaza

category cork | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Sunday January 04, 2009 18:49author by Joe Moore - Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaignauthor email mapuche at eircom dot netauthor phone 087-2994796 Report this post to the editors

A protest against the Israeli slaughter of the Palestinian people in Gaza will take place at 1.00pm on Saturday 10th January at Daunt's Square, Cork.

Israel carefully planned its latest butchery in Gaza. Ehud Barak asked the military to prepare an assault over six months ago-even as a "truce" with Hamas was being negotiated-according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

The current assault is pre-meditated murder, not a response to Hamas's rocket attacks as Israel's supporters claim.

The F-16 fighter jets used to bomb Gaza were paid for by a US government that intends to hand Israel an average of $3 billion a year in military aid for the next decade.

One of the worlds most modern war machines-armed with tanks, helicopter gunships, war planes and even nuclear warheads-is being mobilised against a population that Israel has sought to drive back into medieval conditions.

Gaza's 1.5 million people are crammed into a tiny strip of land. Half of the population are children and half of these already suffer from "post-traumatic stress disorder. Israel's economic strangulation of Gaza since June 2007 has shut down 95 per cent of industry and left more than three quarters of it's population dependent on humanitarian aid for its survival.

Since Israel's assault began over 500 Palestinians have been killed and thousands wounded. This was the situation when the ground invasion began late on Saturday night. Since then the situation was deteriorated drastically for the people of Gaza.

Over the past week hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world have demonstrated against the Israeli butchery. Last Saturday almost 500 people marched through the streets of Cork.

This week we need at least double that number. Please pass the word to your family, friends, community and work colleagues and urge them to attend.

Bring posters, banners, placards, flags etc to show your solidarity with the Palestinian people.
