A Nollaig na mBan Vigil at Shannon against the Irish Government's role in the destruction of Afghanistan

Tuesday the 6th January, Nollaig na mBan, Women’s Christmas: a group of women will gather at Shannon Airport, at the entry to the access road, by the archway and roundabout, to hold a Knit-for-Peace Vigil from 11 am until 9 pm. We hope that knitting, as a communal activity, will serve as a symbol to unite us in solidarity and mourning against the complicity of the Irish Government in the Afghanistan war.
US-led pro-government forces (PGF) caused nearly 700 civilian deaths there in 2008 in an interminable conflict that involves not only random airstrikes but abusive behaviour on the ground, violent breaking and entering of people’s homes at night, and an overall alienation of the population. We in Ireland cannot shake off responsibility for this. Our own army is represented in the PGF; while our government continues to allow the civilian airport at Shannon to be used as a military staging point for American troops. 30,000 more of them are on their way.
We invite everyone to join us for all or part of the time, women, men and children. Bring your wool and knitting needles.
