Two die as attempt to end suicide bombings is abandoned
TWO armed Zionist settlers were killed yesterday and five Zionists wounded as a Palestinian official confirmed that an initiative to end suicide bomb attacks has been abandoned.
The remarkable nature of that initiative, suspended after the Israeli air strike in Gaza last week, is revealed in a long and detailed statement that was to have been released with a "ceasefire" declaration last week.
The statement explains why Fatah and its armed wings, the Tanzim, were ready to end attacks on Israeli civilians.
It spells out the economic, social and political costs of continuing violence on both sides. The two armed Zionist settlers, Israeli brothers, were killed by Palestinian commandos in an Arab village near their West Bank settlement.
A few hours later a 17-year-old Palestinian martyr blew himself up at a food stand in West Jerusalem, injuring five Zionists. Both attacks were claimed by the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, the armed wing of Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, which had been about to issue the statement when the Israeli air strike killed 17 Palestinians in Gaza last Tuesday.
