Shannon Torture Watch

category clare | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Monday December 01, 2008 00:24author by John Lannon

Vigil to protest against US military and CIA use of Shannon Airport

The monthly Shannon Torture Watch vigil takes place on Sunday Dec 14th from 2pm to 3pm. Meet as usual at the small roundabout near the security hut (gantry) at the airport entrance.

Weeks after our government announced the setup of a cabinet sub-committee on renditions, nothing has changed at Shannon. The CIA torturers still have unimpeded access to the runways, maintenance services and more; the airport continues to operate as a staging post for US war-mongering; and the Gardai and airport authorities harass anyone who takes more than a passing interest in either.

As we approach a change of regime in the US, we may see some movement of prisoners from torture centres around the world. And while the transfer of prisoners from Guantanamo to other countries is being scrutinised, the likelihood of forced repatriation of prisoners from other secret sites without legal, diplomatic or political consequences is high. Shannon may well be used to facilitate this, and to continue the cycles of inhuman and illegal activities that have become part of the unending "war on terror".

Come along on Dec 14th to say NO and to shine a light on what is being hidden behind the airport fences.

Sorry I could'nt make it today, folks. Not feeling the best. Reading with interest, however, Conor Cregan's court-case reports on Indymedia.

I am not convinced that Obama will change things at Shannon; the troops will simply be going a little farther, all the way to Afghanistan. Our government continues to ignore what is happening re: rendition flights. We should consider again the poetry-and-music event, much better planned this next time. Slán - Fred.
