Oscar winning documentary screening this Thursday @8.00

The Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny has gained a reputation for bringing the best of contemporary film to north Donegal audiences. Next week, in association with Amnesty International Ireland, it will be screening the topical and hard-hitting documentary Taxi to the Dark Side . This Oscar winning film examines the US military ’ s by now notorious practices of arbitrary detention, torture and extraordinary rendition.

Regional Cultural Centre, Port Road, Letterkenny, Co Donegal
When: 8 PM, Thursday 20 November 2008

Director Alex Gibney uses the case of Dilawar, an Afghani taxi driver, as his vehicle for an examination of the controversial tactics employed by the US in its so-called ‘ war on terror ’ . Though Dilawar was not charged with any crime, or shown to have any connection with either Al Qaeda or the Taliban, he was detained in Bagram prison in Afghanistan in 2002 and subjected to horrific treatment at the hands of the US military, which culminated in his death.

In Gibney ’ s hands this film is at once critical and fair-minded. It includes interviews with former inmates of Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib, and several of the American servicemen and women who were charged with operating the detention facilities.

Amnesty International activists from the long running Letterkenny Group will be running an information stand at the screening on their ‘ Counter Terror With Justice ’ campaign, which aims to end the human rights abuses that are so effectively detailed in ‘Taxi to the Dark Side’.

All proceeds from this screening go to Amnesty International Ireland and tickets are €5 each.
